Realistic mpg

2001 v70 2.4 petrol auto 175,000
Apparently it books at 30mpg but what do you think is realistic ?

Thanks

Had petrol (bi-fuel) auto S60 previously, that returned low 30’s running on petrol on a decent run, obviously less in town.

My 2006 XC70 auto D5 manages mid to high 30s on a sensible steady run and 30 plus or minus a couple on commute, mixed but slow in town. I find it hard to believe that a petrol auto will match or better it.

I’d guess at low to mid 30s on a run and 25 to 28 commute. If it’s not turboed then maybe slightly better.

I have basically same engine & transmission (non bi-fuel) on my 2003 with 130K mi

It really depends on the engine condition.

I always got 45mpg (uk) at 60mph.

As for city driving, when I bought the car I was getting an insulting 17mpg. Now it's rather close to 24mpg (which are the official Volvo numbers)

It took me longtime and several fixed to bring the city mpg to normal figures

Do you know how little the difference between 27 and 33mpg is? It’s a coffee every couple of days. If you are that bothered then don’t buy a vehicle like that as it will cost many hundreds of coffees (years of your fuel difference) once an exhaust goes, or you need new injectors etc, it’s a cheap car that was once 30 grand.

I have the xc90 but also a 1.6tdci focus and that does 55mpg easy, 20quid a year tax and parts are so cheap it’s silly.

Reference the mpg, shove it on a free flowing a road or motorway and you will smash 30mpg, probably 36-40mpg. Start it up and do a short run of 15 minutes in traffic and 24 will be good!

Here are mpg figures for my previous 12 months arranged HIGH to LOW.

2007 V70 2.4, auto, gasoline. My "identical" 2002 returned the same mileage.

38.80
32.99
32.62
31.77
30.36
29.81
29.13
28.64
26.62
26.44

DISHONORABLE MENTION: 19.66 mpg during a 514 mile month with 4 snowstorms. The car was driven out of the way of snowplows and little else.

Divide by 1.20095 for U.S. gallon mileage.

The best I have ever achieved with my 2001 V70 2.4 petrol auto Torslanda (the lower power non turbo version) was 47mpg on a 370mile journey + the return run ie 740 miles thanks largely due to long stretches of the M4 with 50mph restrictions in both directions. At the time the car had around 190k miles on the clock. Brim full on departure the refilled once on the return journey and then topped up to the brim at the end of the that return journey total fuel used 71.5L ie 15.73 Imperial gallons which works out at 47.04mpg..................but I've never got anywhere near it since!

I checked my 2.4t a few times over the years and 60k miles and on a long run at 70mph mainly motorways with cruise control on and well loaded up, it does between 30 and 31mpg.

Never checked it on shorter runs or town work, as my time would probably be better spent looking for something cheaper to run rather than worrying about that!

In fairness, I think that's pretty reasonable for a petrol car that size and weight, bearing in mind it's technology is now 17 old.

Ahh yes, as Ast85 says, "...with 50mph restrictions in both directions."

Smooth traffic at 45-50 = better mileage than 65-75.

I fetched my current car at 4:00 PM on Boxing Day, driving it from Bethesda, Maryland (Washington, D.C.) to Hackensack, NJ at 40-50 mph coming to a complete stop on the highway only once.
After topping off I concluded that Volvo had tweaked the engine to a miraculous level of economy.

But you can always check the weather forecasts. Clockwise rotation around high pressure systems and anti-clockwise around lows. Keep the wind at your back if your schedule is flexible enough. Ha-ha.

Also, I see I provided only 10 months of data. Sorry.
