Friday night Diesel fun

Hi all,

I've been working on my 740 TD and thought I'd post some pictures of what I'm doing.

Nice work but sooner you than me. Beautiful part of the country you are in as well. Been quite a few years since I was last down there.

Looking good!

740 TD, this wouldn’t happen to be a white auto 745 that came from the UK would it? 🙂

That ones a manual, you can see the clutch master cylinder and lack of autobox dipstick in the photos!

Doing head gaskets is never that much fun, worse still in the sort of weather we are currently "enjoying" - not sure what it's like on the Emerald Isle but hats off to the OP for doing it regardless!

Nope....not a white one....its a low milage silver saloon.

The reason the head is off is the casing that holds the injector is in cracked and broke!!

I had another head and that is gone to a engine specialist in neighbouring town for refurbishment. I removed the head to get ready for replacement.

Next step is to clean the bottom end....I've sprayed it with grease to stop it rusting. I was happy to see how clean the pistols were and to see hone / cross hatch on bore.

Also waiting for mls gasket and top end gasket set to arrive in the post.

Yes the weather this time of year is a bit of a challenge but I'm luck enough that I can have the car into my shed so I can work on it even if it's raining.

Yes they are really a rewarding car once they are set up right and maintained correctly. It's really nice to have a retro car in this location to take out on spins in the countryside and along the rugged coast.

Also getting on top of the dreaded rust while it's only surface rust. The front of the 700 and the 900 are a bit vulnerable around the lights, the radiator support and battery tray.

I've use a stiff wire braded wheel to clean back to bright steel and some rust treatment, 2 thick layers of undercoat and will finish with epoxy paint.
