40 years old
 

Next month the first 700 series will be turning 40 years old, is there anyone on here lucky enough to own a 700 that will be becoming tax/MOT exempt?

I've got 5 years left to go on my 1986 760 turbo as it was first registered in April 1986 so it will miss the cut off in 2026.

Good heavens, is it really 40 years? I remember looking at them admiringly when they came out.

That means the very first ones can apply for historic vehicle status at the end of the year in which they turn 40 and then running costs plummet as car tax and MOT are no more. That starts to make them very inexpensive classics to own and run.

Just 8 years to go for my one owner 745 GL but, will I last that long to benefit from the reduced costs. For some reason it keeps entering my head that I should really pass it on but, it's a very difficult decission after all these years!

my earliest one is 1985, counting the years down!

Only another 6-7 years for me with mine as it's a 1988 car so i'm guessing 1st April 2029 when i can finally stop paying road tax.

Knowing my luck they'll change something though and i'll dip out yet again! :rolleyes:

They certainly would have stood out from almost everything else on the roads when they came out.

They did and many people thought they were far more exotic than a Volvo when they saw a 760 back in the early 80s - thought it was an Aston Martin Lagonda at first glance or a smaller brother of it.

It was a futuristic looking animal 40 years ago, the only two contenders i can think of for similarly futuristic looking cars at the time were the Rover SD1 and the Ford Sierra (not launched until 1/12/82 though) but the "novelty" of the SD1s looks had worn off after 6 years by 1982 when the 760 was launched.

Thankfully the 760 was and still is a lot more reliable than the Lagonda!

Over here perhaps but back home in Canada they looked quite American to our eye with their square edges and flat panels. They brought to mind cars like the Ford Country Squire (abbeit without the wood) and the Chevrolet Cavalier/ Oldsmobile Firenza.
