i also don't have the skills to make one of these. could a member make a rental one. if you want to borrow it then guessing £50 deposit and £10 to borrow it. would this be possible?

Code readers

Would there be any interest if I made a few up? Not sure how much they would work out to be, probably around £25. I'll work out exactly if there is any interest.....

If it will read my '96 960 then i'll take one, i'm assuming those on ebay are no use for this model from what I've read here?

Cheers

Defo interested to buy one, you could be the man to see like Jinathan for the injectors!

£25 seem to cheap factoring parts, unless you bulk buy the componants, £35 seems fair and is about the cost of a half decent OB2 unit!

Come on Criag make it happen bud.

Kindest regards

Your right they won't, I have wanted this since I brought my car and it will stop you or your mechanic throwing parts at a issue!

I think that there is a group of us on this site that would need one, VOC parts/tool hire don't have it so there is a gap in the market for sure.

What part of the tester do people feel unable to tackle?

The hardest part I found was soldering the wires into the OBD2 plug.
If you don't fancy doing this you can buy the plug pre-wired: OBD-II Plug 12V to 2m Flying Lead
Un-wired plug: OBD-II Plug with Shroud + Strain Relief

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w...codereader.jpg

From memory the parts came to ~£17.

Tools required: Multimeter, fine tipped soldering iron, thin electrical solder, screwdrivers (various depending upon components), drill & drill bits to make holes for components, wire cutter and stripper.

Components:

OBD2 plug (see above links)

All the following I bought from Maplin.
6 core cable, minimum 1 metre (or buy the plug pre wired).
Plastic box.
Grommet to protect wire as it enters the box.
Rotary switch (minimum 4 positions) & knob.
Momentary action push button switch.
12v panel mount LED

The shape/style of the components is up to you. I chose a box that would fit easily in my hand and switches that looked nice.

To make installation easier I mounted the switches/LED in the bottom of the box, NOT the cover.

Once you have fitted the components into the box, just follow the circuit diagram. It is quite simple. Use a multimeter to check your connections.

I have never attempted to build anything electrical and didn't want to bodge it or fry anything electrical. I thought I might ask and someone who might not need or use it anymore.

Thanks for the diagram's and knowledge Gavin

Roll up! Roll up!

CrogThomas is happy lend his time to build five OBD2 units, Whoopee!

So many thanks for his assistance, what a champ!

We have to wait until he does all the costings and has the time to build them but for those who haven't got one or can't build it this is a good chance to get one.

Interested people can add and amend names to the list below.

1. FossilFish
2. ???
