Starting issue, rough running
Not content with normal busy life i saw a project on eBay.
S60 2.4 D D5244T 163bhp, 124K to add to my fleet, hopefully as my tow car. Sold as spare or repairs, struggles to start and runs rough. What I know, 5 recon injectors from Edinburgh diesels with pass off test rig paper work, installed end of 2019 previous owner. Then COVID hit, not really used till I brought it. I've changed the fuel filter element, and confirmed the tank transfer pump runs, and supplies fuel up to the High Pressure pump (inc bleeding to HP pump). Removed the EGR and thoroughly cleaned. She will start after around 10 secs of cranking. VIDA fuel rail pressure I think is slow to build, 3 long secs before 300,000hpa. ((no comparison but our 1.6D instantly jumps to 300,000hpa on initial crank.)) When started she sounds pretty smooth, idle see's 350,000hpa. If you increase RPM, smoothly or rapid I cant get over 450,00hpa. ** Doesn't stall** when you REV or dab the throttle, it sounds rough like an agricultural tractor, pinking. As it warms up it gets worse. VIDA Fault Trace, nothing really in ECM. I appreciate some direction on testing thanks in advance |
are all injectors the same code? may also need to be coded to the ecu.

These injectors do not require coding as such, they do however need to be of the same class. There are class 1 2 or 3. If 2 or more are a different class the car will not run correctly
Take a data reading directly from the fuel rail pressure sensor to confirm the actual values being sent to the ECU . After that , it might well pay to perform a leak off test BUT first thing would be to change the fuel filter before going any further . Also root out any clear fuel pipe and look for lots of air bubbles , you do get a small amount of air in some systems & common rail set up can deal with this |
Injector class
I have 4 X class 1, and 1x class 2.
However, I thought the class number is from the original Bosch/Volvo calibration limits, this full set from Edinburgh diesels have supposedly been reconditioned, so the original classification doesn't stand? I've ordered a leak off test kit n bottles to check leak back. I read there is a injector test facility in advanced on Vida any one used it? |

Takes up to 10 secs to start again, as soon as started set the stop watch. 1minute at idle . Shut engine off then drained the small clear hoses into the measurements bottle's. Even split of fuel all under 20ml .

I've done leak tests on all classes of Euro 3 injector and whilst I know it's well under the 40ml threshold, 20ml still looks like a lot for 1 minute.
In your position I'd be getting Vida on the job and running the fuel correction test to see what compensation the ECM is having to make for each injector. Having Bosch reconditioned injectors with no thought for the leak back class the ECM is programmed for just feels inherently wrong so at the very least check the current programmed Class in the ECM and try alternatives. Reconditioning 5 injectors at such a low mileage feels wrong also given they normally work fine well beyond 200k miles. One injector may throw a wobbler and need replacing but never all 5 so it sounds like it's been in the hands of someone who likes to generate big bills rather than fix root causes. |
Have a look at the sensor on the high pressure pump. I forgot to connect mine and it sounded like a tractor, was fine again once reconnected. Worth a look.
I also found that my P2 wouldn’t store fuel pressure codes once the ignition was turned off, I had to read it with the engine still running in fault mode. |
ECM fueling test.

An unreliable source told me VIDA parameters advanced, checking injectors, is for euro 4 onwards engines. Euro 3 (mine) will return incorrect data?
