Fuel Consumption

My 2007 new model D5 (185hp) V70 Geartronic is only returning 32MPG on a run. Its been back to have updated software but with little effect. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Literature claims 39MPG.

Don't know if it helps but my experience with a 2008 S80 D5 auto (as I've said before):

18mpg around town, 28mpg combined and around 37 on a long 70mph run

That was with a brand new engine, taking it to around 2k miles with a couple of long motorway runs and a fair bit of urban and mixed driving too.

IMO, 32mpg on a run (how much of a run, at what speeds?) might indicate a problem, but there's too many variables to be sure.

In my S80 D5 Geartronic I can achieve high 20s to 30 mpg around town. It drops if it's stop start stuff to low 20s. On a run I get an indicated average of 45mpg at a cruise controlled 75mph. If I switch to manual I can achieve higher figures around town. Mileage is just over 10k. I'm getting around 430 miles to the tank around town equating to an average of 23mpg. It isn't brilliant, but economy wasn't the reason I bought it. Comfort and practicality were my main reasons and it does them with ease.

i average 28-30 combined which i still think is great if i had the T5 id be averaging 10-12

That's crazy! Me and my housemate both get mid-high 30s (MPG) out of our PETROL S70 and C70 on the motorway at 70mph...the latter being a T5 auto. My combined MPG is typically 28-30 (mixed driving), and I'm not shy with the right foot. Ryan does mainly town driving (and Lincoln traffic is pretty bad), and averages around 20mpg.

Either the new cars are far heavier than the older ones (which I'm pretty sure they're not), or something is wrong.

cheers

James

Those are good figures Jimbo. For comparison my 850 T5 will manage 23 around town and 32 on a 75mph run. With diesel prices staying hiked, the benefits seem to be diminishing! The weight of new cars surprises me every time though. My mums 08 C30 is only about 100 kilos off my 850 afaik.

I had an 04 S60 D5 with the older 163 in it and on a run from Aberdeen to France it achieved 42mpg fully loaded with 2 adults, a child and a boot full of holiday stuff. That was 75 on UK motorways and 80 on French!!

My XC90 D5 Geartronic does 28mpg around town. 37 to 40 on a run.

I can only dream of fuel economy like that from mine at the moment! ABout 32 on a motorway run in the car on my own. 26 round the town.
