440 and 460 relays.
Looking back over time it seems that confusion reigns as to what relay is where on the 400 series.
I have had a "dig" around and as far as I can make out, the following applies. Broadly there are two main versions of the main relay distribution box - an early one which includes the fuses and a later one containing relays only (with fuse box in RH under dash panel). Also note that not all cars or versions have all the relays shown. http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...elaysearly.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...relayslate.jpg In addition a number of relays are located behind the dashboard and these seem to apply to both early and late cars. http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...therrelays.jpg Note the relays shown on the A post may (on UK cars) be located on the nearside. I think I've got this right but if anyone can correct any mistakes or omissions or add any extras we should end up with a definitive list. Mollusk. |
That's splendid and just the sort of useful thing the forum should have. It's a shame there isn't a technical illustrations database that would stop things like this getting lost in the system.

Relay Location
Thats great Mollusk..very useful. Can I add that I think relay 12 on the 'late' list is the Terminal 15 Ignition Relay. Cheers, Sarumboy.

Absolutely correct Sarumboy - Relay 12 in the 'late' box is +15 ignition controlled supply.
My fault entirely - after I had drawn up the diags. and posted them I realised I had left no.12s description off.!! (one senior moment down to me then - but at least it shows people read 'wot i rote'. Mollusk. |
wow mollusk What a post. Thank you so so much mate. That info is invaluable as haynes dont mention which relay does what. Thanks again.

Hi there M Bullen - glad you find it useful - actually part of the credit should go to you, it was your "help desperately needed" post that gave me the idea to dig around and see what went where!
All the best - Mollusk. |
Does any of this relays (for the later models) control the power for all the gadgets in posI (radio, heater fan, etc...)?
Because the strangest thing happened to me today. After I turned off the car (I removed the key), the radio and the interior fan was still on. I even disconected the wires that goes to the key barrel and the thing was still on. What was even more strange, was that when i rotated the fan speed from max(it was at max when i turned the car off) to min everything turned off. Can it be a stiking relay? Another strange thing that happened today (wich I do not know if it is related) previously to this problem, when i tried to turn the engine (key in position III) the starter did not crank. This is not new to me, I even had a post here (http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...oesn%27t+start) where I even had to change the ignition switch because it was burned. However, since I changed this switch the problem disapeared (almost a year ago) today was the first time it happened again. Cheers. and thanks for the usefull info about the relays |
Hi Mollusk, do you know if there was a 20 second interior light relay or where i can get my grubby mitts on one??
Mine switches off as soon as you shut the doors, i would like it to stay on for a few seconds longer - the green light around my ignition barrel is wired into the interior lights and its frustrating fumbling around in the dark lol  |
I'm pretty sure there is no relay and that the lights are meant to switch off after closing the doors. I say this as I recall a 480 owner fitting a capacitor to the interior light circuit such that the lights gradually dimmed after door closure!
