Newbie! Advice please.
 

Hello,
I'm sure lots of people ask loads of stupid question so ill try not to but would respect any advice.
moving from Honda CRV 2.2Idect to Volvo XC60 budget will stretch to 2016/2017 R-Design lux nav.

Questions/ concerns

1. D5 or 2lt D4 FWD?
Honestly concerned about fuel consumption Honda 36-40 around town 51-54 long run. (I've seen some youtube vids of shocking figures)
2. Any real issues to look out for when buying as most in my price range are non main dealers
3. finally any pointers or buying advice?

I have the D4 2.0L and have had the much documented problems with egr, cooler and is awaiting the official recall for melting manifolds!
Fuel consumption around town is 40 which increases to 50 on a run.
I'm getting rid of mine in January due to the lease running out and will probably look at a Jag to replace it. I wouldn't go Volvo D4 again, but may consider other engine options as the car itself is fabulous, but the engine is just meh!

The 2L 4-cylinder VEA engine just has too many problems... I've needed EGR cooler and valve replacement (the latter only getting 50% goodwill) and also awaiting recall action on the manifold deformation/fire threat, although Volvo seem to be struggling to produce the necessary improved parts! Additionally I suffer from the 'oily fumes' and engine oil consumption problems widely reported on the forum for this engine, plus I find the overall ~50 MPG slightly disappointing.

It's otherwise a really great car, but the engine is a massive concern. Maybe if you go AWD you can find a late 5-cylinder model?

I agree with what has been said before. There are too many problems with the EGR/Cooler/Inlet Manifold/Oil Consumption for a recommendation for the 2.0 D4.

If those problems were fixed properly then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the car. As far as Fuel Economy is concerned I average low 40's for in town and can get low 60's for out of town runs, but the latter can only be achieved by driving with a very light foot and no Air Con running.

I have a 2017 D5 AWD and never any engine problems, really great engine and car. Fuel consumption never a concern, always been happy with it getting around the 35-40 in town and 50 other times.

Advice would be to look for one with the 5 cylinder D5 AWD engine, you won't regret it!

Didn't think Volvo 2.0l engine would be that bad.

Guess it will be D5 then, Still that will help when towing our caravan:rolleyes:

We've had our 2014 D4 auto for around 75k miles now, just had 5th service.

Only issue was in first year with some adaptive cruise issue - fixed under warranty, no problems since.

(touches wood) - not had any engine/EGR issues - mixture of town work and higher-speed motorway/dual carriageway.
The Adaptive Cruise is ABSOLUTELY brilliant, the flippy headlights very clever (& bright).
Looked at new one, felt it was just too much (as many vehicles are these days), so decided to stick with the known. For at least another year!

The D5 engine AWD with the TF-80 gearbox is probably the most bombproof drivetrain of that year of any car.

Contrary to the advice above, and having owned one from new and done over 60k in it the D4 VEA (later model - MY16 & 17) is fine, if you get the auto you get the newer 8-speed box as well. There were one or two issues in the first year or so but keep in mind the D5 goes back to 2002 so has 15 years worth of feedback!

The twin turbo 220 D5 is a cracking engine but the 4-pot VEA is more refined - and probably at least 15% possibly 20% more economical (given it's FWD not AWD).

You will not get the MPG you got from your Honda but the comfy seats will make you forget all that....

LUX is the only spec to have as you get the brilliant ABL lighting, the TFT dash which is quite good (but much better than the poverty dash on other models).

Do you really want R-Design though? Stiff suspension, harsher ride and bigger wheels with more expensive, shorter lived tyres.... SE LUX NAV is the pick for me.

The most recent 5 cylinder D5, introduced in Euro 5 spec in 2009 is actually a completely different engine to the two previous D5 engines. Volvo started from scratch and built what has probably proven to be the best passenger car Diesel engine built. Some say it lacks refinement - I think it makes a wonderful noise under load. A real shame they stopped building this engine.

Having owned both engines under consideration, I would look for a well maintained D5 - the new VEA D4 just isn’t in the same bracket.

Although fitted to a V60, I can also vouch for the D5 engine’s brilliance. Nigh on indestructible is what all the mechanics say to me! Also +1 for the very nice 5 cylinder sound.
