Grills

Has anyone had their front grills colour anodised?

Derek UK Oct 18th, 2018 12:54

Once aluminium has been anodised it can't be redone. The process is a controlled chemical corrosion which leaves a tough protective layer on the surface. A colour dye can be added during this process. To allow the process to be redone would require that the anodised surface be removed back to the raw aluminium. It may be only 10 to 15 microns thick but getting that off evenly without destroying the smoothness of the finish would be difficult. Obviously not viable for a grille!
Soda blast and paint, cheap and easy.

Good info from Derek...I'd add to that, that Grills being in the location they are, are challenged and get blasted by sand and debris in service, so ANY treatment and finish needs to accommodate this without looking poor soon after a few miles (which would rather bother me...)...with this in mind, and as an alternative, I (pre!)blasted my grills, then painted them silver...so they look silver and good (although not polished and shiny) immediately, and also after a lot of road-time.

Cheers

Do Amazons have aluminium grills then?

My PV grill is most certainly made from a material that rusts...

Stainless is available

Possibly for the PV as the originals are steel and do rust. What's the source Simon?

All Later Amazons have aluminium grills. The early ones with the large centre bar have steel mesh backing grilles that do also rust.

A few choices on Google,Made in Vietnam!

I've seen the stainless versions for the PV - thanks - obviously a new version (not original)

But

Wow

At what cost?

The thing I was wondering about was if the OP was talking about that fake anodised paint rather than the actual process because back then (time of my first post in this thread) I didn't realise they were actually made from aluminium...

Are you talking about the mesh or the surround?

I'm talking about the mesh

(The surround is a chrome plated rust prone item on my PV but is actually in good condition compared with the grill)
