thinking of buying a 2009 v70 2.0d r design but need info
hi , been over a year since i got rid of my v70 cross country d5 , but now i find myself looking at a 2009 2.0d 136 bhp volvo v70 r design.
it looks great in black and drives superb , its just had a new clutch and flywheel with a slave cylinder , the car had done 112k but im worried about what engine it has got , the engine cover is grey and ive heard there 2 136bhp engines the ford psa and the volvo , any idea what year they changed and if this lump is good , the timing belt hasnt been done yet and the owner says it doesnt need it until 150k or 10 years which it is now , so i need this doing plus theres only 1 key... any help would be good to help me make up my mind , cheers:angel_smile: |

If the car is badged 2.0D then it has the PSA engine. If it’s badged D3 or D4 then it has the Volvo engine. If I could afford it then I’d go for an early D3 with 163 HP. That will be a post-Ford Volvo, which would be my preference. |
The PSA engine was designed by Peugeot and IIRC recommended cambelt changes are 10 years or every 160-180k km, which is about 100-112k miles.
Can’t see the Ford/Volvo version being much different so, whilst 10 years is OK, 150k miles definitely not! Also, most makers usually recommend that, for heavier use, belts are changed sooner which, with a second-hand car can be an unknown. I would say it’s due now and should be your first job - if you buy... As usual, it also makes good sense to change idlers, aux belt and water pump at same time. |

volvo don't use ford cambelts ... no problems with these failing prematurely ... water pumps the same , ultra reliable ... |

Except when it's 12 years.... I have a 2.0D S80 and I thought it was a 10 year interval. When my dealer quoted (Clelands) for the service this year it wasn't nearly as expensive as I thought it would be. They told me that it was a 12 year service interval and according to this it is. https://www.volvocars.com/uk/own/mai...rice-indicator confirms this. |
ended up getting the car for £3000 , id say thats a right steel at that price , it will come up very nice in black , need to sell my other car now to pay myself back into my bank:teeth_smile:
1st jobs are timing belt kit and the steering wobble , its just had a major service so im laughing....yippee back to a big estate , cant wait till thursday |
just to add , what would i expect to be paying for a belt kit fitted please , local garage has said around £300 with genuine or gates parts

But wording is every 150000 miles OR 10 years which ever comes first . maybe the web site was for a different market where it may be true |
The genuine Volvo kit for doing the belt on that engine usually has a Gates belt in it... that said though its likely made to a much better spec that the Gates stuff you get from Euro Car Parts etc.
It's a easy job on that engine. |
