XC90 Tyres

Hi All,

Newbie post, so forgive my ignorance. Anyone had issues with rear tyres shouldering off "prematurely" on an XC90?

I've been advised by my dealer that 20,000 is the expected life-span for these due to "body-roll" - even though this appears to affect only the rear tyres.

At a cost of £450 for two tyres (dealer's price for Continentals) - this is a non-trivial issue.

Anyone else been given this message ?

Cheers
Rich

Hi Rich
20,000 miles.Well done! I've just touched 33,000m miles and just had my third set fitted all round.
They are ripping you off too, with the price.I had 2 fitted today to my rears and they cost me £150 + vat fitted. I do know there is a shortage of them at the moment, apparently Volvo are buying them all up for production cars.
The tyres I had replaced today had shoulderd on the outer edges.

Would it be worth getting the dealers to check the rear wheel alignment? It should be adjustable as they are four-wheel-drive vehicles (of sorts) and will be prone to wheel misalignment and/or premature failure of shock absorbers.

All the best, Peter.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies - quick comments

i) I took the car elsewhere to get new tyres - I replaced the 4 Continentals with Michelins (which everyone has told me is the better tyre) for the price that the dealer was asking for 2 Continentals. It was at this tyre-fitters (independent - not high street hawks) that the manager remarked that every XC90 he'd seen had done the same thing - rear tyres shouldered off prematurely.

ii) I took the car to the dealer to get a full allignment done (££kerching) - there were some mixed comments along the lines of - 20K is good wear, the body roll of the car causes it (why just the rear then?) and Oh the allignment was out. I asked if I needed to keep checking the allignment if it's so susceptible - their answer was - it will be in for a 36K service -it can be checked then (probably too late)

I have little/no confidence in what I have been told by the dealer - I'll be interested to hear if anyone else runs into this same issue.

Happy Christmas to you all.

Cheers
Rich

personally i dont see how body roll can cause this - drove a 340 with knackered suspension (thus more roll than a bakery) and the tyre wear was pretty even. granted, the cars are completely different but i'd be suspicious of that reason.

There is no excuse for uneven tyre wear on new cars!!
My local tyreplace is a nissan dealer aswell and they also have a £15k laser aligning system - tracks the whole car -.
They check and adjust every new car that they sell as 9 time out of 10 the cars are out of factory specification.
So go to an independant tyre specialist with full laser tracking - they also give you good prices on tyres! -
I suggest that don't wait for volvo to get there collect bums into 1st gear, but get it sorted - it will save you money in the long run.
Every car I buy is immediately optically tracked so not to destroy new tyres unnecessarily.

Cheers

Hi, new to this very useful forum!

I've just had to change all four tyres on my XC90 (1 year old, 17.5k). The two rear tyres had nails/screws embeddded but plenty of tread, whilst the front ones had pretty well had it anyway.

Micheldever Tyres fitted ContiPremiumContact tyres despite me leaving a note with my wife saying I wanted Pirelli Scorpions. They were a couple of quid cheaper at about £114 each, so we'll see how they go.

The fitter also reckoned they were out of alignment on the front; I've been left with a printout after the £25 test; my wife doesn't know if any adjustments were made, however the document seems to suggest that the alignment was out by under 1%.

It is important to have all four wheels alignment checked as there are a few which come slightly misaligned from the factory. It is a good idea to re-check the alignment when replacing tyres and to do a weekly check on what crap they have picked in the treads and look for damage to sidewalls etc.

In common with most 4-wheel drive Volvos the front wheels receive most of the tractive effort in normal driving resulting in more wear on the front tyres than on the rears.

All the best, Peter.
