Replacing coolant thermostat V70 2010 2.4D

Hi has anyone replaced the thermostat on their Mk V70 2010 2.4D ?. my sons car has terrible fuel consumption compared to his earlier s60 . We know the car is heavier and its automatic but 28 to 30 on a run is a bit much . As the weather has warmed so the MPG has improved . This got us thinking that possibly the engine is running too cool. With no temperature gauge its difficult to see whats happening. He purchased a blue-tooth OBD device that will measure the engine temp and its running really cool even now the weather is warming its still only reading 50deg 55 after a hard run .I believe he said the correct temp for the coolant should be in the late 80's C. The replacement ,only available through Volvo is a large complicated affair costing £125 .Its buried away at the back of the engine and looks very difficult to get to. Any advice ? The really annoying thing about this is that the car has been Volvo maintained by the previous owner and never has the low running temp been diagnosed . How many more cars are running around scoffing fuel in the warm up mode due to a dodgy thermostat ? I was thinking of replacing my p2 D5 with a P3 2.4D but now not so sure.

It seems to be a feature in 2010 models!

After looking at the position of the thermostat housing my son called volvo MD and asked for a price for fitting .The thermostat is situated down the back of the engine between the turbo and the block , totally buried and hidden from sight. The main dealer quoted £230 , and 1.6 hrs to fit ! . He went to collect it the following day after lunch after phoning and was told " It should be ready by the time you get here" . Apparently this is the first of this type of thermostat that this dealer has fitted (they said)and the fitter was really doing his nut. It eventually took over six hours to fit ! The Dealer honoured their original quote though. So total to replace a thermostat £350. !!! The alternative was a nightmare of a job on axle stands and climbing over the engine. I really think the designers have lost the plot ! They give us great looking cars with lots of toys that we dont really need and leave off essentials like temperature gauges ,proper dip sticks and make basic maintenance almost impossible. Only good thing is it gets warm now.

After nearly 2k miles since mine was replaced I can agree - I have not seen any substantial improvement in fuel consumption sadly.

Final price for replacement seem a bit steep, although I was quoted similar in one of the places. Luckily I had a choice: other dealer was much more affordable...

I have 2008 d5 xc70. We went a way for the bank holiday whith the caravan. When we are ready to go I let the car tick over for a w While to let the Engine Warm up before we go. While the car was warming up on Monday I heard the engine note change as the the thermostat opened up. Have you tried leaving the car runing from cold to see if you can hear the thermostat open up ?

Hello David . No we didnt try that. we usually dont idle the car but drive it as soon as it started. We now know that its getting to the correct temperature quite quickly ,running at 90-92 deg. To check it we have to plug a blue tooth addaptor in to the OBD 2 socket and use a app on an i phone . Prior to the new thermostat it could have idled all day and been driven around the country and it would only reach 50 deg.

Perhaps someone could correct me if I've got it wrong.Looking at the car and the Haynes manual the thermostat is where you would normally expect to find it
i.e. at the right hand side at the front.,where the radiator top hose joins the engine. Once some coolant is drained off this
should be very simple and quick to change. As said the whole unit now has to changed, unlike the Phase 2 which I once changed for about £16 I think!
I see that Eurocarparts do the Ph3 thermostat for £87.
Sorry I should have said I have a 2009 V70 2.4D and as I said if I'm wrong please speak up!

Replacing thermostat

I'm pretty sure my thermostat is knackered since the heater doesn't blow hot air and my shiny new bluetooth gizmo and Car scanner app (really impressed with them) show the coolant runs at about 50 deg C tops.

I'm also pretty sure its behind the engine, what a place to put it.

I am about to tunnel in from underneath and maybe the wheel arch, has anyone been in there and have any tips?

I’ve just bought a new stat assembly for my 2010 D5, cost about £140 - can’t stomach taking it to a garage to be done, so will be pulling it apart on the drive when there is an interlude in the wet weather.
That has an appetite for diesel, high 20’s (knew I should have bought a 3.2 petrol!) and the gizmo I bought showed it running at 55-70 degrees and cooling as soon as load taken off the engine.
I’ve got a progress thread in the P3 section that I’ll update once I start the job.
