960 Rear exhaust box
 

Morning all

I'm looking at buying a 960 with what looks like the wrong exhaust fitted to it. Where can I get the correct rear box from? The one the car has on it now looks like it's from a 940. It doesn't look right on the 960.

I am guessing that the box for a V90 would be correct for a 960, if the 960 is an estate (rather than a saloon). I think the V90 is essentially a 960 estate except for minor changes.

Think that's set for the 940 but you'll find many of the back boxes are the same through the range.

My 1996 960 3Ltr recently needed a new rear exhaust. I wanted a genuine Volvo replacement and my AD eventually needed to import one from Sweden. The part that arrived had the Volvo factory sticker, giving the part numbers, bar codes, etc, all of which matched what the AD's computer indicated as being the correct replacement rear exhaust for my car chassis number.

But the new rear silencer is not the same design as the old one that was on the car from new - it actually fits on the car OK, but it looks different - more cylindrical, like a 940 rear silencer. The AD acknowledges this but, on checking with Volvo was informed that the original design of 960 rear silencer is no longer made and that the current design (very much like a 940 silencer) is the only part now available for my car.

As I say, it physically fits on the car and it sounds OK, but it doesn't look as neat as the old one did. I've sprayed it with matt black exhaust paint to make it less conspicuous to following drivers!
