bad luck

yesterday i went to move my 144 started it up and was greeted with thick white smoke coming from the engine bay. i lifted the bonnet to find 1 of the alternator wires had shorted out and cought fire also setting the petrol supply pipe on fire. i got i put out quickly and the damage is minimal but it will still take a weekend of rewiring to sort out. the only thing is the alternator is damaged , any one got one ?????

Sorry to hear of the fire, erm, they do that sir!
Still, not as bad as my old Landy, the cotton loom was properly on fire, but it still got me 6 miles home in the dark with a nice glow from the dash:err:

Anyhoo, upgrade to a more modern one, try Parts For Older Cars and have the part number for your old one handy. The only old alternator I've got is goosed, although if you want to rebuild that too.....

Sorry to hear about the fire. But lucky that you spotted it straight away; could have been a lot worse.

Unless you want to upgrade, it should be possible to get your old alternator rebuilt (if the casing hasn't melted).

Best of luck getting it sorted out.

Cheers
