Steering lock/column '66 122s

I have a steering/ignition lock on my '66 122s but think originally it came without as there's a hole in the dash where the original ignition once was and the armoured cable and original Bosch coil is still there.Don't know if it was a factory conversion or was done by one of it's owners at some point in it's life.

Pic showing the conversion, the horn doesn't work of the steering wheel but a working horn button has been mounted on the dash just above the fan switch. The overdrive light is up between the cig lighter and fan switch.

The original ignition housing with armoured cable still remains with wires attached that I think lead to the new ignition(must take another look)

No complaints from me as everything works as it should . I may in the future want to fit a 123gt electronic dizzy and uprated coil as I've read good stuff about it but is my set up going to complicate an install ?

Big silence lol..what's up ??

I will talk to you!!!!

That steering lock is as fitted to later cars. My February 70 amazon has this lock. The later cars relied on the steering lock as an anti theft device, rather than the armoured cable / coil unit.

sorry what did you need to know ? i just read through the post and i could`nt see any questions i would say you are correct with your findings it had been a early type ignition barrel and then converted over to the newer style ignition lock on the steering colum ;)

nice pictures as normal you love that camera which is good as we see some lovely pictures from you happy posting & motoring

speak soon

it looks a very well done conversion from this end ;) and they must have used a volvo colum ignition by the looks of it so dont worry all looks as it should and safe including the connections they made to it.

Nearly 4 years later(still have the 122s) and am now tuning up the motor with stage II head and different cam plus high performance coil and 123 Tune Ignition.

So as the wiring is, from the old ignition to the steering lock ignition do I have to remove the old coil, cut the armoured sleeve and access the cable inside so that I can feed it to the plus connection on the new coil ? Is that the simplest route to take ?

Steering lock cars use a separate coil. Are you using this type? If so the armoured coil is redundant. Seeing as it looks as if you have the early type steering shaft with the doughnut, does your steering actually lock?
If the armoured coil is redundant you don't need to access the single red wire inside the cable. If you did want to access the wire to get a positive feed for a dizzy that needs both pos and neg you can carefully cut a hole with a spot weld cutter (because it's flat)in the centre of the coil cover under the dash to allow you to solder on an extra lead to the dizzy. Repair hole with a grommet. Drill to the minimum depth to cut through the cap.

Yes the steering lock works and so far as I can see the steering column came with it, it's the split type. The steering lock ignition is fed of the wires from the original dash mount ignition switch minus the cylinder. The armoured cable goes from the original coil to the original dash ignition.

If you are going to use a new coil why not remove all the connections to the old ignition switch (they will no longer serve any purpose) and connect up the new coil as was done in cars that were originally fitted with a steering lock.

For the electrical connections to the steering lock, see:

The red wire (switched +ve) goes to one of the two internally bridged terminals of the fuse box. The other one of the bridged terminals goes to the +ve terminal of the coil via a brown wire. Your car will have the red wire but maybe not the brown one - easy to add. Note: the connection to the coil comes from the un-fused side of the fuse box, so power to the coil is not fused.

I have attached a copy of my car’s circuit diagram and have coloured the wires in question. Better copies of the diagram can be got off the web.

(The wire marked ‘*’ is confusing because the left hand end of it doesn’t go anywhere. It is for a rev counter, which my car doesn’t have. Volvo deleted the rev counter from the diagram, but left part of the wire in place.)
