MOT fail.

My 1996 Volvo 940 LPT had it's MOT today.

Unfortunately it has failed on:

Lower steering universal joint and,

Nearside Ball joint/ track rod end.

Phoned FRF Volvo and unfortunately the Universal joint is no longer available.

Does anyone know where I could get one by Monday?

has play in it!

I might have one, I know I sold a couple for the same reason and I've kept the best one for myself as a spare.

If I can get a good used one I'll do that to get through the MOT and then get a new one from Germany etc, when less time constraints.

On the upside James, those are relatively minor failures. A track rod end is a relatively simple and cheap repair, the UJ is more involved and labour intensive (not to mention the cost of it) but in the great scheme of things, still relatively minor. At least there were no gaping rust holes in the sills, brake failures, suspension problems and so on.

Also both of those failures would be difficult (not impossible) to detect at home, even with the right gear.

Yes, not too bad. Everything wears out eventually. Had 3 years of MOT's with a straight pass and no advisories so can't complain. The chap who did the MOT showed me the play in both.

The UJ looks an ok job to do so long as they don't upset the airbag clock spring, while knocking the UJ up the shaft or turning it too much. I'm getting the garage to do the work.

Now rust would of been a major pain. My 1989 240 welded outriggers never lasted, after 2 years had to have the nearside re-welded. Always rusted through on the weld.

Thankfully the 940 is very rust free.

That'd be all the zinc, yeay.

Never did a UJ, but did track rod ends, easy. Cheap, too.

Still looking for a good used lower steering universal joint.

What is the name of the Volvo breaker up north, that's supposedly closing? Think off the A1?

Many thanks.

James.
