We have owned this car for just over 5 years and put over 50k miles on it. In that time it has had impeccable reliability and has never let us down. We’re really sad to see it go but have decided it is time to move on.

Prior to us purchasing the car, it had full service history, the majority of it through Volvo main dealers (Newbury Volvo feature prominently – we purchased it from them in 2013). We have serviced it ourselves annually, replacing oil (quality - either Shell Helix or Millers), filters (Mann) and carrying out any additional preventative maintenance. There is a considerable collection of receipts, past MOTs and bills which really shows this Volvo has had a well-looked-after life from the beginning.

This is also shown on the exterior and interior. Although there are a few car-park dings (most notable a scuff on front bumper and a small ding above the passenger side rear wheel arch) and a few stains on the cloth interior, for a 17 year old car it is in really good condition. There is a small amount of rust on both rear wheel arches (pictured). I wouldn’t anticipate this being a problem, it hasn’t progressed much since we purchased the car – we just give it a coat of Bilt Hamber AutoBalm around the arches before every winter. The paint has been well cared for and we have always hand washed it and it has a good coating of wax and sealant to protect the paint in the coming months.

Unfortunately the car has a high biting point on the clutch (the clutch occasionally squeals when pulling away). So I’d suggest the new buyer budgets for a clutch replacement (A high-quality Sachs clutch kit is available online for around £100 and Volvo VIDA advises 5.5hrs of labour to fit it). The car runs really well and pulls well in all gears. We have VIDA (Volvo diagnostics) and there are no errors reported from the car’s control systems. No advisories on most recent MOT. These cars will do the miles if cared for; Volvo High Mileage Club lists a 1.8SE as doing 351,289 miles.

This car was factory fitted with the Family Pack, which means you get built in rear booster seats for children in the back, heated front seats and remotely operable child locks. This is a very desirable feature. It has a 5 speed manual M5P gearbox and the Volvo 1.8l 4 cylinder engine (the very reliable cousin of Volvo’s 5 cylinder petrol engines – NOT the often troublesome Mitsubishi designed GDi). It has 4 good tyres (2 of which fitted this year which are Goodyear EfficientGrips).

Lots of preventative maintenance has been done by ourselves, see below:

In the last year –
  • New Aux belt and INA tensioner
  • New Driver’s side engine mount
  • Replaced both front droplinks
  • Replaced thermostat
  • Brake lines renewed behind fuel tank
  • Replaced driver’s side headlamp wiper motor
  • Replaced fuel filter

Since owning the car, we have done the following jobs –
  • New Volvo Ignition coils, HT leads and plugs
  • Fitted uprated Varta Silver 096 battery
  • New Volvo fuel pressure regulator
  • Replaced front brake discs and pads and rear pads (Ferodo)
  • Fitted reconditioned rear brake calipers
  • Fitted new Volvo crankshaft position sensor
  • Replaced washer fluid level sensor
  • Renewed FM aerial gasket and replaced aerial with VW ‘stubby’.
  • Gear linkage bushings renewed
  • Replaced fuel pump

We’ve never had issues with VVT – it does not ‘tick’ and runs smoothly (as you’d expect given regular oil changes). It has a quality rubber boot liner and genuine Volvo carpet mats. The car comes with 2 working keys, paperwork, handbook and radio code.

Please see Imgur Gallery for more pics.

All in all it’s a fab car with a decent bit of MOT left on it, just needs a new clutch really. I know we’ll really miss it.

Sold as seen, collection from Paulton, 9 miles south of Bath. Please PM to request more info or leave phone #. If you cannot PM, just reply to this thread.

Would love to see it go to a VOC forum member. You guys have all been so much help over the years!
