lifting a V70 level

Hi folks, would it be safe to lift a v70 by putting it up on ramps and then jacking and putting it on axle stands at the back, the idea is to have it level for the next flush and level check?

Georgeandkira Feb 14th, 2020 14:11

Heavens yes.

You'll be on relatively level ground to start with, no?

JoeNinety Feb 14th, 2020 14:17

Get your (suitable) axle stands under the four lifting post points (behind front wheels, in front of rear wheels) Use wooden blocks to get level.

For transmission level check, the car must be on level surface. The simpler way is to measure what comes out and refill the same (always through the dipstick hole) . Here's the lifting and jack stand points I use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gtY-IZQgfw

Hi, thats assuming its never been changed before and that the level was correct in the prior to me starting, this is why i want it up in the air a little and level so that i can do a proper Vida level on it, i am trying to rule out anything that could make it clunky, it will be a software check after that, no dipstick on mine :)

PS. whats the rough going rate for an indy charge to do a software check/update, i spose you get stitched even if it does not need one?

Bashy Feb 15th, 2020 16:18

1 more quicky, is a pair of 2 ton stands ok or should i go higher?

oragex Feb 15th, 2020 17:28

2T is more than enough to get under the car - don't even need to extend them much, perhaps only 3-4 'clicks'. I recommend inspecting the welds on them if it's not a known brands - many inexpensive ones have poor welds.

Thanks, I will be on the ramps for the fronts and stands at the back, so may need some reasonable stand height?
As for the quality side, not sure, the stands are a mates, he lent me them ages ago, for a previous car i might add, they were brand new then  he keeps telling me to keep hold of them so, what can i do?? lol Will just buy him some more

I think I'd go ramps at the back and stands at the front so I'd have a working hand brake to prevent any possibility of the car rolling.

Thats a good point, didnt think of that  although i am on a level surface'ish, its gravel

Bashy Feb 18th, 2020 03:38

Well, i managed it to a certain extent, ramped the back wheels, then tried to jack up the front but my jacks could'nae handle the power needed captain, had to resort to the old trolley jack (a big weight for my back to carry), its very old. I had to bring the car back down the ramp about halfway, cause the tj just couldnt handle the lift pressure to get it high enough at full ramp height.

Whats more, when i was jacking the front using the tj, it was slowing pulling the car over towards the jack, yeah i know, gravel does not help ;) it also tried the otherside too when it was on the axle stand, so i couldnt go quite as high on the last corner, but it looked as level as i could get it.

Was certainly a tad nerve racking putting it up but once up, it felt safe, just didnt have the clearance i was wanting but managed the job....

A new TJ is needed for sure, will get one for the next round :)

That's a reasonable price for a safe, good quality Trolley Jack you can
bet your life on!
I know what you're thinking punk. You're thinking " is it worth it or not?" Now to tell you the truth, I've forgotten myself in all this excitement but being this is a big heavy Volvo and it will take your head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: 'Do I feel lucky'? Well, do ya punk?

I've owned a Clarkes 3t quick lift ( the one with the pedal) for a number of years now and found it to be excellent, bought from Machine Mart. Quite often do a VAT free offer, normally on spends over £50, but not on at the moment unfortunately. I've filtered for 2- 3 tonne, check the jacks out here:

Bashy Feb 18th, 2020 17:44

Lol, that's where the stands come in handy :)

Don't think I'd put anything soft and squishy under any car supported only by a jack...except whilst placing the stands of course, and then I move quickly!

That's what stands are for :) I would never go under a car with just a jack

I have an SGS trolley jack that is built like a tank

https://www.sgs-engineering.com/tj3x...ntpage-nosto-2

3 ton, only £70 and nicely made. Their axle stands are things of beauty too.

BlueRubber Mar 24th, 2020 16:56

Another +1 for SGS, got this trolly jack, high lift and low level:

As mentioned their axle stands are awesome too.
