V40 D4 Manual Brake Fluid condition

1 Attachment(s)
Our V40 D4 manual is 4 years old and was purchased as a Selekt car at 2 years old. The Brake fluid was not changed as it should have been as part of the 2nd year service.

The selling dealer changed the brake fluid FOC as part of the 3rd service.

The car went to a different dealer for the 4th service after only 6,000 miles completed in the 12 months since the 3rd service and the dealer states that they doubt the fluid was changed 12 months previously. So the brake fluid was changed as part of the 4th service. I have a photo of the old and new brake fluid.

The used fluid has a moisture content of 4%.

Any ideas how the brake fluid could be so bad after only 12 months?

Or is more likely that this was the first brake fluid change the car has had since manufacture?

As far as I am aware, brake fluid absorbs moisture so maybe your car is kept in an area where the air is heavy with moisture. I would assume cars kept near rivers etc would absorb the moisture much faster than a drier area. I would also assume that cars etc in some areas in the World would need the brake fluid changed every few weeks due the very high moisture content in the atmosphere.

Looks like old fluid to me. I'd be inclined to think it was never changed.

If it is a manual, the clutch fluid will be in the same condition ...
