gearbox problems
Hi folks
so i have a 2005 xc70 automatic the gearbox when hot drives awful and makes a proper clunk when changing at times and a vibrating sound ( sounds like exhaust but must be the box). i have done a gearbox oil change and also added some of the lucas clunk stop but still no joy. it only happens when car been driven for 20 min and is hot. when i put in tiptronic i have found that if i drive it as you would a manual car thats clutch has gone it seems better - so i change up when revs are dropping - this seems to go into gear without the clunk. does this sound like a gearbox issue or a clutch plate or similar as i have no idea how these autos work Thanks ian |
they arent the best box. Make sure the level is correct when hot and engine running. also if the previous checks out then do a reset using VIDA / DICE

Have you definitely used the right oil? How much did you change?

Here we go again. No offense intended. Your situation has come up before lotsa times.
How many miles are on your 2005? Do you do work like this yourself or have it done? 1) I believe the selection of aluminum for some of the actuation cylinders' liners wasn't the smartest. Once anyone gets the fluid clean the snake oil I use is LubeGard in the red bottle. The makers claim it's a proprietary lube. I read about the stuff and had success using it. 2) Did you yourself do the fluid exchange or did you pay someone who said they did? If your fluid was black and chunky a mere 3.5l sump drain and refill will leave plenty of dirt behind. The question regarding correct fluid is important too. Dopey slobs in lube joints have looked me square in the eye and claimed there was no difference among transmission fluids. There are fluids members here have used successfully. A 20l keg from Germany is the one I'd use if I was going to really purge my system (and lived on your side of the Atlantic). The Volvo branded fluid is quite expensive. Toyota Type-IV (T-IV) is a readily available substitute. Get the fluid clean and add the 1 oz. per system quart of LubeGard. The next phase of the conversation involves detailed diagnosis. Replacement of the valve body comes up next. The more adventurous of us have made videos of replacing the aluminum bore liners of their own valve bodies. If God came down from heaven to help me I'd love to try doing that. |

The cheapest possible fluid is from Smith and Allan but the Miller specs are slightly better IMO. https://www.smithandallan.com/produc...mission-fluid/ |
£88 delivered from smith and allan. £4.40 per litre (20L)

I did the sump drain myself and it was a little black but no bits or lumpy- i used jws3309 which i was told was correct for that gearbox. i have since checked the dipstick and its stayed well clear so think the oil may not need a full drain. i will try the lubegaurd see if makes any difference. it has 160000 miles. just trying diy things at min as car would not be worth spending a lot on. what is the reset i need to do?
thanks |

As usual..
Read the lot. Will give you an idea of what to expect, what to check, how to do it etc, even if it was written for someone else: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=279054 |
