Volvo 360 milometer jammed + speedo no working?

Own a 1988 Volvo 360. Have a fault on the speedo and the milometer has jammed. Doesn't stop car passing MOT. Speedo fault intermittent works one minute then just drops out. Milometer now jammed? Rev counter works fine. Can experienced 360 owners tell me are these repairable faults or is this a trawl the scrap yards to then fit a complete speedo, rev counter and milometer console?

The speedometer on these is cable driven. Does the speedo work fine when it is working?

If the odometer doesn't work even when speedometer does, I'd look at swapping the cluster. Plenty of people on the Volvo 300 facebook pages breaking these so you could pick one up readily enough :)

If you have a 6-gauge cluster (with external temp gauge and vacuum gauge) you can swap the extra gauges into a 4 gauge cluster by removing the blanking plates.

Quite a common problem, shouldn't be any need to swap your dashboard. A fix is documented here:

I suspect your intermitted speedo is a seperate cable related problem

Looking at this post, the thing overlooked is that the gear at the opposite end of the shaft that drives the display digits works loose on the shaft, so pushing the other end back into mesh with the worm gear doesn't solve the problem. I added a blob of superglue to the shaft and refitted the worn gear and it gripped tightly. Few hundred miles later and it's still functional.

Funnily enough, I emailed someone a copy of that guide only yesterday!

Let me know if you need a hand with it - I must be reasonably local!

cheers
