To tune or not to Tune my D5 - Please help
Hi all,
i'm a noob so please be gentle... I know there have been many posts on ecu remaps and loads of debates on the best providers but i'm still confused having read loads!! I have a 2006 C70 D5 SE lux and although i'm not generally a speed freak , i'd like just a little extra grunt at my disposal. I have concerns that an ecu remap could cause problems , especially with the transmission. i also need decent fuel economy as i travel 30k + pa. what i'm after is some simple feedback from those in the know: 1. do these remaps do what they say on the tin? 2. whats the best/most reliable company? 3. is it common for problems to occur? 4. are increased mpg claims realistic? 5. should i combine a remap with hardware upgrades to ensure the components can deal with the extra strain? 6. any good installers in the west sussex areas or are the softloaders better? thanks in advance for any responses ben |
Would Volvo themselves be able to remap the engine for optimum performance during a service? Anyone had this done?
I know there are plenty of companies out there if you search the net who offer a remap for about £150-£200 which will give 15%+BHP or more the bigger the engine. Would be interested to know, like Ben, the pros and cons and is it worth it. Mine is a 1.8 se 2004 model, whilst I've changed the panel filter to K&N and had a custom s/s twin exhaust fitted I could do with a bit more - I know it needs a re-tune after having the exhaust fitted as Im sure its not running its best after these mods so I will get Volvo to do that but if they could do a remap too then great. :thumbs_up: |
After much deliberation I am having a remap from Angel tuning on monday on my V70 D5 163 I would like more torque and MPG for towing I also have a geartronic so will update once I know.
I have confirmed that if not happy I an have it re set to standard. |

we offer the RICA upgrades and all that have them done have noticed an increase in power and MPG. Most have even noticed the engine/car is driving alot better. check this link.... http://www.rica-uk.com/ and... http://www.rica-uk.com/viewcar.aspx?vehicle=119 the good thing about the RICA maps also, is that if you go for the lowest such as the e-power map for £352.50 and you then decide to go for the next stage up which is £440.63, all you pay is the difference which £88.13. But if you decide to go for the the higher maps such as the stage 2 240hp upgrade then you will get the lesser maps along with this. So effectively you will be getting 3 remaps for £484.69. hope this helps Chad |

The C70 D5 is detuned compared to the full 185 bhp in the v70 etc . Volvo say this is due to there not being enough space for the full size radiator and intercooler as per the bigger volvos . You would need to address this before going for way over the designated 180 bhp ...
thanks for all the replies! do you think i might experience overheating issues if i went for the ecu upgrade? 215 bhp and 420 nm. would rica have considered these issues? |
The intercooler is only about 30% the size of the one on the V70 185 bhp D5 for example so raising the boost and therefore inlet air temperature isnt going the right way for power or reliability . It would be interesting to see what RICA do mechanicaly as well as software ....

The Premium Swedish written MTE software for your car costs just £435 including VAT and is written by Sweden's leading independant software engineer using all the same equipment that you would find on the bench in Volvo's engine development shop in Gothenburg and the most intimate knowledge of Volvo's own callibrations and codes, all equipment and knowledge unavailable to competitors in Holland and elswhere.
MTE's software will give you outputs of 220bhp with 475 nm of torque. This software will give you optimum outputs when you are seeking some pace on the road and allow for a considerable improvement in fuel consumption when required with more 'sensible' driving. It is well known that some so called 'sports' D5 maps cause mechanical failures by running boost pressures way to high for the standard hardware arround the engine. With diesel engines in particular there is only ever one optimum set of software callibrations for higher outputs, frugality and component protection. You install MTE software in your car yourself with the aid of the unique MTE Softloader device that acts as an interface between an XP equipped laptop and your car's OBD port. I can supply that Device against a fully returnable deposit of £155. If you do boy the Device outright it allows you to swap between standard Volvo and MTE software at will plus you can buy additional data logging and diagnostics software packages for £65 each.
