8 Speed Geartronic

Hi, XC90 is a likely replacement for my MY13 XC60. Does anyone know if the 8 speed box is more robust than the earlier 6 speed? The 6 speed does seem to have a reputation for being the weak point in the drive train with reports of quite a few playing up before 100,000 miles (indeed mine had to be replaced at 75,000 miles).

Thanks

Only time will tell, not seen any reports of bearbox faults on the new XC90s yet.

I assume now it's been about just over 3 years there must be a few with over 100,000 on clock so hopefully that means if there were any inherent weakness it might have shown by now?

Lesson might be of course to keep it 4 years and 70k then swap it 😁

Here is a link listing all the cars that use the transmission. Interestingly, the first use was a Lexus RX sport: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AWF8F35

From what I read on the volvoxc.com forum, problems with Geartronic is often caused by not flushing the transmission
fluid in time. Volvo says (said?) that the transmission fluid was life-long, but reality seems to be different.
Grear-changing apparently suffers because the solenoids don't work properly anymore.
Flushing the transmission fluid periodically seems to be the best way to avoid problems with Geartronic transmissions.

Hi Gabygreat info appreciated, are they talking about milage or time periods.

Volvo do say if it's used as a taxi or to tow change at 36000 miles or 2 years. Getting a dealer to do it is sometimes harder since they often repeat the "sealed door life" line (despite mine having had a tow bar from.new)

I wonder if other manufacturers routinely change the fluid and Volvo doesn't?

Hope the info on wiki is incorrect on the 6 speed as it says it's max torque is 440nm, and my XC60 is 470nm!

I believe, since the fluid is synthetic and the transmission is a closed system, it is mainly a matter of mileage,
except, as mordred1973 wrote, the car is used is very specific conditions.
I know that ZF recommends to change the fluid, they even have instructions on their website how to do it:

This ATF refresh service is being pushed in the USA for keeping the automatic transmissions running longer. With automatics being less common place it might take sometime before dealers and others will offer this type of service.

I remember hearing some words that fill for life is the life of the transmission and not the vehicle...usually the transmissions in the 40-80K mile mark.

Out of interest who makes the Volvo 8 speed auto is it still Getrag? Or is it the gear factories finest? (ZF).
