Identifying the M90 version

I was trying to identify the version of my box through the catalogue but I can't understand if it is 1208947 or 5003994.
My chassis number is 214878. I don't understand what "Gearbox, exch" mean.

Can someone clarify please?

My interpretation of that would be that 5003994 is an exchange gearbox that could be used to replace 1208947. Probably also some other part numbers. Volvo went through a spell of rationalising spare parts.

That was my theory. But it's an odd way to put it, because normally the parts that were replaced just show up in the right column as "repl by xxxxxx"

Do you know anything about whether ot not it is possible to fit the 1208937 (it's the 940 saloon version) in a wagon? Or the 5003985 which is the 230FT version!?

I guess the saloon version might have a different lenght, so you would probably need to replace the drive shaft, but why would the FT be any different from the FK version?

Forrest, look at this. While I couln't asnwer my own question, i found some more interesting info on this. According to the great writeup on turbobricks:

1208947: M90L2

B230FK
5DRS CH 198077-
(REPL 8111096-7)

8111096: M90L2

B230FK
5DRS CH 198077-

5003994: M90L

B230FK

Supposedly the 1208947 was replaced by 8111096 which is also an "L2". But the 5003994, although it fits the car, is an M90L, not L2. So maybe the 5003994 is the the same older "L" version that was retagged with a different reference because it also fitted later models.

The same post says the L2 is much better. Quote: "The most durable M90 in stock form is the M90L2 which only came in late '97 and early '98 (or both M90L2 and M90H2 from '97-'98 for whiteblocks). It has the updated syncros and a better stop-ring on 3rd gear and will tolerate more missed shifts etc."

My chassis number is 214773. You've almost certainly got the M90L2. The sticker on mine was still attached 15 years after it left the factory.

H/L/L2 are interchangeable. Saloons usually came with H ratios as they were not expected to be bought by antique dealers lugging junk around.

Thanks. I was wondering if H/L/l2 were interchangeable.
To be fair I don't know if min estill has the sticker. I never seen it. But it does have to be the L2. My concern was with interchangeability. Because my gearbox is 500k+ km and I wanna be on the lookout for a spare one, just in case mine starts having issues.

How much are un-rebuilt m90s going for? I've seen on on the spanish market for 450€. Guy said it was a 940 saloon from 95, but it doesn't have the sticker. I suppose it is either H or L.

All petrol M90s bolt up the same and work. Just different ratios between the H and L boxes. in the UK, I got a M90 box for £200 about 6 months ago.

alright. thanks for the info. I'll have my eyes peeled. If I found one has cheap as that I would definitely buy it to have as a reserse. It's better than needed one in a pinch and having to pay whatever the guy is asking. especially here that deals deals don't come very often.

Did you install yours or bench it for later? Did you rebuild it?

No rebuild kits available as far as I know.

Just put mine in my garage because as you say, better to have it on hand than pay whatever when you NEED one.

Are you serious? Does that mean professional guys that rebuild gearboxes won't be able to rebuild m90s because parts aren't available anymore? If one breaks internally, it can't be repaired?

I thought I had heard here on the forum of people having them rebuilt professionaly. But maybe I am mistaken.
