S60 D4 Purchase

Hello All,

I am looking at my first Volvo on Monday, an S60 D4 on a 2014 plate, it looks immaculate and amazingly, no kerbed alloys. Its done 51,000 miles so is there anything In particular I need to look out for?

Am I also correct in assuming that as its a 14 plate, this is a 4 cylinder jobbie?

Hi Clan,

No idea, I haven't seen it yet, Its the 181bhp model if that helps

Zebster Nov 14th, 2018 10:51

I'd assume it was a 4 cylinder VEA engine? They are both 181 PS.

Well done for finding one with decent alloys, mine were quite badly kerbed and corroded. They seem vulnerable, judging by the number of discarded buckled, cracked and otherwise damaged Ixion wheels available on eBay!

My biggest concern would be that the EGR valve and cooler could cause issues. There has been at least one recall for modifications to be performed (more than one, I believe) and so you may wish to check that this car has had the necessary attention. This thread refers, and also includes a post with pictures showing how the absence of a T-piece on the top rad hose confirms at least some of this recall work has been performed... https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=221555

Additionally a few of us have suffered a lesser problem where an exhaust oxygen sensor becomes sooted-up and causes a slow response error code plus the engine warning light. Apparently Volvo need to clean it and update the engine software but I still need confirmation of that. I suggest you also find out if this has been done... https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=283810

It's a lovely car though!

Thanks Zebster I will check that out :)

It has taken us ages to find one in this condition and with this spec (parking camera and everything!) and they are lovely looking cars, I was also looking at a Lexus IS250 but the missus persuaded me otherwise lol

I've only had mine since July, so still learning! There are a lot of clever little features (although mine is lacking a reversing camera)! Hope you're looking at a 'Nav' model?

I hadn't seen Clan's post before I posted. You might want to find out which engine you are getting, as the 5 cylinder has it's own problems and a costlier VED.

Hopefully you'll get a spare wheel. These are rare and I had to buy one...

Yes its a Nav model...

well the road tax is £20 so I'm assuming is the 4 banger in that case...

Yes, same as mine.

Earlier models lacked DAB radio and the updateable sat nav. So you should be alright in these regards.

What model is it?

Its a D4 R-Design Lux Nav and its an auto

Zebster Nov 14th, 2018 11:56

Strange that you get a reversing camera! Must be a saloon thing, or maybe it was an optional extra?

The R-Design styling looks fantastic but I'm not a fan of the overall handling. The ride is far too harsh, imho.

Hope you enjoy it!
