Outer window rubber scrapers
 

Hi all

The outer door window rubber sealer/scrapers on my car are knackered...

I can see that it's available in a few places but isn't cheap

It's a lot of money for what is about 50p worth of rubber, and something which would be generic.

Could someone get an old outer rubber scraper, and take a photo of the profile (ie the moulding shape, side-on), post it here, and we'll see if we can match it from a UK rubber seller. That 3rd seller I've linked to looks like someone who's simply selling a compatible rubber profile by the metre.

Just posting my interest for this as well, I've avoided the job because of the cost but never thought of getting something generic. Let me know if you turn anything up please.

I noticed that this rubber channel (IRS 1656EPJ) we're talking about hasn't got the felt stuff attached to the inside, which might help it when it's rubbing past the window - just a thought.

I had some old scrapers from an old door lying around but can't find them - maybe they got chucked. But I really want to see an image of the side-on profile - maybe we can track down the same product that the guy in California on ebay is selling by the metre at £61 for 4 doors.

I replaced these on my 240 last year:~ later this evening I can post a couple of pictures of the original profile & the replacement type that is available from various suppliers- interdentally the originals are flocked as is some of the new- The straight rubber type may just grip the glass a little too much? So as they have little if any price difference then probably better to go with the flocked type.

Couple of points – the originals are flocked as is some/most of the aftermarket.
All rubber may not be suitable?
The seals are semi rigid (metal inner band) generally in straight lengths --coils will need to be checked for suitability.
The original seal has a small inner section that fit inside the stainless door trim (polished or black) see picture detail.
I doubt if this is still available?
The alternative window seal differs slightly in profile i.e. this inner lip is not present- it doesn’t alter the performance that much but it means that the seal can raise slightly in parts as the window moves (this can be overcome by using a small dab of polyurethane adhesive/seal) I left mine as a straight forward fit and it’s not complaining:
One point on fitting these winder scrapers is to cut them oversize to allow for shrinkage & avoiding end gaps.
As previously mentioned a lot of companies are charging top prices for these and with a little searching via the classic car market you should be able to come up with the same profile.

The above are two recommendations – others are about.
I purchased my set from Brookhouse thinking that the same would be identical to the original Volvo part- whilst they fit they are a generic part and available without the mortgage!!

Please double check the dimensions from the potential supplier but you should get them at a more realistic price.

Hi John: ~ double checked some of the measurements and can confirm that the Baines item you note seems to be the one to go for i.e. 0WS2.
I’ve used this company for other classic trim and they are very helpful – you may be able to ask for a small sample prior to ordering, most of these companies will do this.

Thanks again. Well if 0WS2 from Baines is close to - and possibly the exact same product as - what you got from Brookhouse, which works even though a different profile to original - then this could be the solution.

I'm not sure what is best done to compensate for that extra missing lip section. What about getting an extra very thin strip of rubber which could be glued in to take up that gap? Until I've seen the weatherstrip unit disassembled I can't picture why the original profile was the shape it was.

As Bob says re Baines. I learned of them from work ages ago, and they indeed did send me samples to try on my ancient Ford in those days. A very helpful company. Not far to go to collect either.
