Mot failure help
At 13 years old my S40 failed the mot for the first time.
Failed due to engine mil light NOT coming on at start up. I have had a look at the Haynes manual which suggests the removal of the instrument cluster is just a couple of screws so no problem there. Do any of you know the bulb type for this. And for those thinking the obvious, no this was not removed by a previous owner as i have owned it since 2017 and was ok then. |
In answer to my own question i have found and ordered some 1.2 v lamps from an online Volvo parts supplier.
Now having a Victor Meldrew moment " i don't believe it " the darn lamp its now working okay again. |

do you have Vida - you can perform dashboard check to see every possible icon lighting up |
Not yet confirmed led or lamps as i think i will put in for a retest first as all is normal and don't wish to disturb it just yet.
The lamps i ordered were listed on their site after putting in my car year details. It is a site that only supplies Volvo parts so hopefully it's correct. |

if you find out or if you actually disassemble it, please let us know. |
Now having taken the unit apart i can confirm it's led and not lamps.
This is beyond my capabilities to repair, so do i now buy a used cluster and if so will it need to be programmed by volvo? |

dont know about your question but I would suspect NO - the mileage etc is in CEM of the car and display on cluster just show this info **I THINK** so that would be my opinion. |
Many thanks for your help.
The led for the mil worked every time since the mot then stopped again today. I took it apart and used contact cleaner and it's working again but intermittent. Bit of a nightmare taking it apart as the pointers come off all the dials  I have ordered on off the bay from a 2006 V50 1.8 petrol so will give it a go. Hopefully there will not be any calibration issues regarding the speedo/tyre size. It just worries me a bit as i couldn't lock the doors when the unit was off the car leading me to think its paired. |

I was also almost sure the tyre size etc is part of CEM data and has nothing to do with actual display. Remember that speedo and rev is just an electronic display of CEM data pretending to be manual so it will show whatever info you feed into it. And tyre size is programmed into car's brain so.... again - its only me thinking out loud. |
Okay, installed the instrument cluster that arrived today.
All working ok so not paired to the car. Only issue is my mileage now shows 147K not the 84K my car has covered. |
