foot brake

I am a new to volvo and just bought a 2003 xc90 4.2 diesel all good apart from 1 minor thing, the foot / parking brake does not work. The foot brake ratchets down all the way to bottom but when i was parked on an incline the car rolled, is there an easy fix ? or is this an expensive problem. the brakes have not long been replaced so i can rule this out. Help if possible

Try posting in the section for your model rather than the For Sale section as you will get more responses from owners who are familiar with your car. I was so looking forward to buying a foot brake too :)

You mention the foot brake ratchets all the way down to the bottom. Are we taking actual foot brake pedal here as it shouldn't go all the way to the floor. I guess is the hand brake / parking brake that is playing up? If so, how are you applying the brake: do you press the button or let it click all the way up? The latter is the correct method as it ensures the pawl on the ratchet will engage correctly with the teeth.

I would be wary of assuming that just because the brakes have been done that they must be perfect. New parts can take a while to bed in, they may not have been fitted / adjusted properly, or the part may be incorrect or faulty. When diagnosing a fault its often best to work back from the things that have changed recently to help build up a picture of where the problem may have been introduced.

My advice would be to find a good independant Volvo specialist near you and get him to check it over for you. Let us know how you get on.
