A beautiful goal..
And I don't have anything against it. At all! It'd be just lovely not to worry (too much) about living within practically walking distance from school, for example.. Just pop your kid into car and tell the car to take kid to school. Someone in charge there "collects" kids from cars, cars themselves either come back home or stay in nearby parking ready for pick up run.. All pinky and fluffy :) How do we get there, though? Its going to be one rough ride, that's for sure.. For one thing.. Remember when in fifties or sixties speed limits were introduced? Many claimed the big number of on-the-road deaths in a year prior to that. And completely omitted number if these deaths within a year after limits were in. And that number was greater. Much greater. Now.. One might claim that it was effectively bad idea to introduce these limits in the first place, as this caused the spike in number if deaths... But not me. I choose to blame abruptness with which these limits were introduced. Driver very quickly had to adapt to limits. Change their driving style from observing the road and choosing the speed themselves.. Into observing imposed limits. For many, such a limit equalled to the speed they should be going.. And it many cases, I believe, that speed was greater than safe one. And this is pretty much what I expect to happen with these GPS speed limiters. Human laziness will cause drivers to keep right foot firmly jammed into floor, in expectation that car won't go any faster than it is allowed on this particular road anyway. One worry less to think of, eh? And then there will be inacurracies of GPS. There will be multi level junctions where GPS nay (it happens with all of mine) be mistakenly decide that the car is on a different road tgan it actually is, road with different, smaller or greater, speed limit.. And all of a sudden that car may start braking.. Or speeding up. Because computer says "match the speed". And driver doesn't react- it was programmed! It is safe! Pretty much why I DON'T use cruise control on long journeys. Minding the speed helps me to stay focused. If I didn't have that throttle pedal to keep.on checking.. Straight motorway, night, calm, comfy, warm, nothing to do.. Doze off... BOOOM!! Then again.. That road to pink fluffiness will be full of.. Crooks. Men and women with one ultimate goal: make the most of money, quickly. UltraLowEmissionZone my a*ss.. " if you're rich enough, you'll buy new car(stuffing pocket of manufacturer) and won't have to pay extra charge. If you aren't rich enough- here's not that small extra charge that you'll be paying. Daily. So we can be sure that you can never afford new car and we have constant income". Stuffing pockets of city officials. One way or another, you are expected to pay, pay, pay, for something that doesn't really change you'll be driving the same way as you did before, maybe in new car, maybe in old.. The air won't be any cleaner anyway.. But your wallet goes trough weight watchers regime. There will be more. |

Drivers fall into 2 categories. Those that drive from nessesity and to whom it is a chore. Those that enjoy driving and see every journey as an opertunity to practice their skill and improve it. Personally, I would not mind retarding the ignition, priming the oil pump and tickling the carburetor, nor going round with a grease gun greasing trunnions, in fact I still do the latter with the landrover every time it is taken off road and when it returns if waded. It is part of the enjoyment of driving, constantly trying to do it well. Paul. |
