Euro 4 D5 inlet port cleaning advice reqd

I've decided I'm going to take the plunge and get the lifters changed to sort out my XC90 2006 tug boat  ...

Not confident enough to do it myself, it's going to cost me serious money I don't really have so, as our mechanic has worked on our cars for over 20 years, I'm going to pitch in (to save some money) and do some cleaning whilst he's doing serious stuff

Anyway, it occurs to me that it'd be prudent to clean everything to within an inch of its life whilst it's stripped to try to head things off nasties later on. The EGR path seems the obvious and prime candidate.

So, I was wondering what advice you lovely, clever people have for cleaning out the ports once the swirl flaps are removed? Obvs I'd do the flaps too. What happens to the junk dislodged? Where does it go? What's the best way people have found for making sure it doesn't end up in the cylinders?

All advice gratefully received and sorry to be so dim!

Dude

Plug the holes of the removed manifold and fill it with a solvent (yellow dasty is a cheap good one) and shaky shaky
Use your imagination
