Hi, what's the purpose of the small pipe highlighted by the card, is it just a breather? I'm converting from air filter box to separate "sport pancake" filters.
Also the crankcase breather. Can I just blank it off. I don't think that it will doom the planet:) as well the breather pipe from the oil filler cap to inlet manifold, do I really need that? I would like to eventually try to find a chrome rocker box cover and filler cap and get rid of the messy pipework.

Any particular reason for converting the filters? AFAIK, the airbox type is just as free flowing, but is also much quieter than the pancake type.

Will look much better when the motor has been out and painted. At the moment the engine bay looks a bit messy! Will compensate for xtra noise by more sound deadening, particularly the inside of bonnet.

Messy is the way it was made, removing hoses from the engine and putting chromed bits on it doesn't sound very 'concours' to me.

You could try the blue filters that were on the B18B, you can connect these to the breathing system like it is supposed to. Still not 'period' though.

The air box is actualy worth about 3BHP over the best flowing pancake filters.

From what I can see in the photo that will be the fuel over flow pipe.

Do not blank the breather pipe off, you will need to either connect to the new filters or re plumb so it breaths to under the car.

I take your point.

i agree with classicswede. For most people the airbox is an upgrade over pancakes for the b20. Hang onto it if I were you...

When I changed from a b20a to the new engine with twin carbs, I went the pancake route but am now about to change to the air box set up, will be interesting to see if there are any changes.

arcturus Nov 4th, 2010 10:10

How will you quantify that?. BTW I noticed when looking through my "Volvo cars engines" book a few illustrations showing the "pancake" set up. Also the "custom performance" section shows an illustration with Volvo blue filters.

Snowman Nov 4th, 2010 10:54

No idea really! Logic says that a ram air feed to the carbs ought to help breathing. As usual, if I've spent some money, I'll convince myself it is better!

From a cosmetic perspective, the blue filters I've had to date look fine but I'm more interested in how it goes rather than how it looks.
