Hi

I change my automatic gearbox oil every 30/40,000 miles, so approximately 55,000kms.

I wouldn't wash anything as the new automatic gearbox, is used to flush through the system, and once done, continue to add the new automatic gear oil to fill to the coorrect level.

Do not use gearbox oil additives and cleaners.

Also you may need the expensive Volvo spec fluid depending on your automatic gearbox.

Which type of oil will depend on which gearbox you have - is it 4-speed or 5-speed?

If it's the older 4-speed then the oil you need is Dexron III.

Hi

If you have the owners manual for this car, it will tell you which fluid to use.

If you don't have that, then you can go to http://www.vindecoderz.com/ and put in your VIN number. It will tell you the gearbox model.

6 = AW42 automatic gearbox
9 = AW55-50SN automatic gearbox

If you look inside the engine compartment, on top of the gearbox is a metal plate with the gearbox code on it.

Also you can look at your gearshift lever.
If it shows RND3 then the gearbox is a 4 speed, which takes the cheaper Dexron automatic transmission fluid
If it shows RND4 then the gearbox is a 5 speed which takes the more expensive fluid.

It is important not to use the wrong fluid.

Hope that helps,
Steve

The problem with changing the gearbox oil is that you can't just drain the entire lot out. There will always be some oil left in the torque converter and associated gearbox parts so it's literally a job of taking 4l out and then put 4 l in. so you will be mixing new fluid with old. I did mine on my 850r when it was an automatic which is the same gearbox and it took 18 l to clear it from being brown to red.

Do not power flush the gearbox oil as this will damage the filter mesh that's built into the gearbox and this will end up writing off the gearbox.

Hi

You cannot change the filter unless you take gearbox out and strip it down. It's quite a large filter and never heard of it needing to be changed.

Yes that ATF is Dexron 3 so you will be fine using that.

After you have changed it you should feel a difference but may take a few hundred miles of driving whist TCU totally adapts to the new fluid characteristics.

So if use 18l oli ti wash gearbox how did you understand the exact amount of oil to put in the gearbox?
Thanks

remove the oil drain plug on the bottom of the gearbox and measure the amount of oil that comes out replace nut and put the exact same amount in down the dipstick then remove the supply hose on the oil cooler start the car up and this will pump out a quantity of oil when the oil stops turn the engine off and put the same amount of oil in . continue this until you've used all your oil or the oil turns red.
