low mileage S90 D5
Hi dear all
Is it the normal situation that my mileage is rarely better than 26mpg? 75% city, 25% motorway. I don't drive _very_ lively, although I'm not sluggish either. But hey, it seems soo low, doesn't it? Is there something I can check myself? |
Hi,
I have a MY17 S90 D4..... over winter and city only driving fir short journeys i was getting 20mpg!!!!! I was shocked to say the least! However, Motorway driving for an hour and a half got me 56mpg.... Think its the city driving..... |
Just had our D5 for less than a month, we're seeing average of low 30's for city commute, going up to mid to high 40's for longer motorway and a roads driven economicaly. Previous car, a Passat CC diesel, was around 10mpg better, as I could easily get high 50's or more for long journeys. But that car was a bit slower (140hp model), probably quite a bit lighter and FWD only.

It tends to improve over time.
It's not a reference mileage if your car is bellow 15.000 or 20.000 km. My XC60 did 20 mpg at the first 3.000 km I'm averaging now 30 to 35 mpg with 12.000 km done and I still hope to improve this mileage. |
Recenty posted the following on another thread:
I’ve just clocked over 3000 miles in the 3 months since I got my car. I drive in Comfort mode all the time and whilst I don’t drive it like a sports car, I get on with it… I don’t take too much notice of single journey figures, but I do always record the tank to tank MPG, these are mine so far: 366.8 miles – 44.70mpg 383.6 miles – 48.69mpg 418 miles – 48.94mpg 505 miles – 49.95mpg 530.9 miles – 49.08mpg 562 miles – 52.63mpg 90% of this mileage is my daily commute, 25 miles each way, a mix of motorway, 50mph A roads and approx. 5 miles town traffic. I've found that city driving really does impact the mpg... Previous car was a Skoda Superb 150TDI and like 'badonkadonk' I easily got 10mpg more when doing short journeys/city driving, however, tank-to-tank fills are only 3 - 4 mpg less and it does seem to be improving as the car settles down. Rightly or wrongly I never use stop / start, I turn it off as soon as I set off... Terry |
Don't take much notice of the trip mpg if reset and the journey afterwards is less than about 15 miles. It always reads pessimistically until a few extra miles have been covered.
Taking that into account, my D5 XC90, a bigger and heavier car, has not been down into the 20's region since the first 5000 miles from new, when it was probably a bit 'tight'. The worse I've recorded for any significant distance has been 32mpg and that was going a bit fast shall we say. On my travels I expect at least 36mpg and my car averages about 38 most of the time. Sometimes it hits 42 or better. I'm off to Stratford upon Avon tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see how the 400 mile round trip goes. S90 would surely be expected to better my car somewhat significantly. |
A quick update on Strtford Upon Avon trip.
Went through Lampeter, Crickhowell, Abergavenny, Monmouth, M50. Back today via Worcester, Leominster, Rhyader, Llangurig, Aberystwyth. Total miles 327 Overall fuel consumption. 43mpg Average speed 36mph Some sections down to just over 38mpg. However today the Stratford to Eardisland section, 60 miles[where we had a tea break] averaged 44mpg, but from there to Aberystwyth, 68 miles, was at a fantastic 50mpg. This is in the XC90 D5 with Polestar driven mostly in Comfort Mode. Obviously any S90 should very comfortably better my figures. Probably hit 50mpg quite regularly when driven sensibly. Must admit that this was the first time ever I've hit 50mpg with it and don't expect to do so again any time soon. There were two of us on board plus one heavy suitcase and the car was driven with the flow of traffic. Very quiet road back today and between 40 and 60 mph was normal as appropriate. On the way there, more dual carriageways and motorways driven [all the way from Abergavenny to Stratford more of less] and these were driven at or slightly above the speed limits. |
I regularly exceed 60mpgs on my 45 miles dual carriageway commute in my S90 D4 R-Design.

Hi jotka
I have an S90 D5 PowerPulse MY 2017. I have an accurate (tankful) record of diesel consumption from 9k to 24k miles. The highest tankful result is 48.5mpg, the lowest is 42.6mpg. The current rolling average is 45.1mpg. The best results include long trips on motorways on UK summer holidays, the worst include local short trips in Derbyshire with predominantly town/city driving in the depths of winter. I love the power of this engine whilst hopefully driving smoothly and sensibly. I have used the highest grade diesel from 14k miles on. "Cheap" Costco diesel (so-called "premium") gave me a warning light from the O2 sensor and very sooty exhaust trims. Using high grade fuel is obviously expensive but solves both problems. I can't reliably distinguish consumption between the two fuel grades. I too switch off the stop/start every trip. I suspect you are suffering from a tight engine and city driving but am still surprised at how low your figures are, given my experience. |
