Xc70 rear shock replacement?
 

Hi, got a 2005 2.5 se lux, it went in for the MOT today and I've been told it needs a new rear shock (explain the knocking noise!) Mechanic has advised the best quote he's had for the rear shock was about £700 as it's not a "normal" rear shock. :speechless-smiley-5

Apparently he can't locate any patten parts, 2nd hand or otherwise cheaper alternatives than Volvo original. Is this correct. Could mean the difference between binning the car or not, so desperate advise needed please.... thanks v much.

I'm not sure if that is the one for your car but Monroe are the manufacturers of Volvo electric shock absorbers so at least it gives you a place to start.

I've just realised it's possible you have nivo's which can be surprisingly expensive. If you have, conversion kits are available( for both sides) which are far cheaper than one nivomat shock.

yeah they are getting quite difficult to get but u can im pretty sure get the oem shocks from munroe for less than half the price volvo are trying to rip u for.

its still very expensive if u factor in the mounts and such gl

basically u need to buy them in pairs and all the other bits to do it properly*

If its nivo's u can swap them out for regular suspension, if its 4c, u have to stick with them or the onboard computers and the government take a hissy fit!
300£ a shock+-//possibly 350 a set... and the seats etc +. 4c has to be 4c and it has self leveling connected to the DTSC I think.......

There is conversation about fitting regular shocks and keeping the wiring to fool the onboard computer, apparently doable but it basically voids insurance...

First question is do you have Nivomat self levelling shocks fitted or the optional 4C suspension?

If Nivomats, they either work OK or they leak. All the advice I have had from specialists is that you don’t need to replace them in pairs if you’re keeping them (ie keeping Nivomats on). I have Nivo’s on my XC70. You have three choices with Nivomats. New are about £500 each. Secondhand are about £75 to £100 each. A conversion kit is about £300 for the correct conventional dampers and matching springs for both sides. The Nivomat is a combination spring and damper in one unit with a ‘helper’ spring around it. You can’t simply fit a regular damper without the correct spring, the back of the car will sag.

If you have 4C suspension, you can fit the Monroe dampers mentioned above.

If you have Nivomats, I have a spare secondhand one you can have for the £75 it cost me.

Hi all - thanks for the input. Yes - it was Nivomat suspension (not 4c).

I bit the bullet and went for the alternative (HD) solution. It's cost me £250 + fitting (yet to be done) but I figured it was the quickest/most reliable way out of a hole.

Once the kit is fitted i'm looking to sell the car on asap as i'm moving over to the world of leasing.

Anyone interested in a black 2005 XC70 2.5t se lux with 12 months MOT, replaced clutch, new rear suspension & 135kmiles?
