Round the clock

Hello,

I had to turn off the motorway and find a random car park to stop and capture this moment: Magnus went round the clock today. (I'm guessing for the second time).

I suppose the mileage on the clock is academic seeing as almost the only mechanical thing I haven't changed is the auto transmission, but it still feels like a bit of a landmark. Let's look at some unscientific stats...

I've owned Magnus for 9 years and done 47,000 miles, which is easily the longest I've owned any vehicle and the most miles I've driven in any vehicle.

I've spent most of those miles listening for noises that indicate a happy or unhappy Magnus, yet the only time he broke we had no warning at all.

One breakdown in 47,000 miles seems pretty good to me.

I estimate I've spent £4,200 per year on owning, maintaining, insuring and fuelling Magnus.

I estimate my parents' 2013 Skoda, doing about the same annual mileage, costs a total including fuel of £5,800 per year.

And I have more fun!

Cool - good to hear an automatic transmission is holding up so well

So what does the clock go up to before returning to zero?

Agreed! Not taking anything away from your achievement, but this very longevity is one reason why Volvo fitted a six-digit odo' to subsequent models, whose owners have to wait 10 times as long for it to trip!

It is also why the cars engender long-term ownership. Not an Amazon, (to my regret, I once passed up on a one owner 20 year old 123GT for £300!), but I had my last 745 for 18 years and my wife her 744 for 15, which is by no means exceptional - so you've still got a way to go yet!

Long may you continue to enjoy Magnus, 'woodman', and I look forward to your next post in around 2040, when he turns 300,000!

Regards, John.

Woodman;

Congrats to you and your car. I wish you many more enjoyable and safe miles!

@ Ron K,

I lost a similar, tho' I think even better Volvo cartoon 30 years ago:

Guy drinking at a bar telling the bartender "The only thing I TRUST is my Volvo..."

Best regards.
