XC60 tyre sealant kit OR Tempa Spare Wheel/Jack Kit
Apparently the XC60 does not come with a spare wheel as std - but instead has a "tyre sealant kit". Although the spare wheel does come as a no cost option.
My question therefore is if I spec the car with the spare wheel rather than the sealant kit - where is the tyre stored ? Pro and cons of each option welcome Thanks NdB |
My XC60 has the spare wheel which is located under the storage tray below the boot floor. I think this is standard on UK cars but you would need to check with your dealer. It doesn't take any space in the boot itself.
I am not a fan of the sealant system as it may be OK for a puncture but will be no help at all if you have a blow out. Also, I believe that the tyre cannot be repaired once sealant has been used so potentially would need to be replaced after even a minor puncture. The skinny spare wheel is not as good as a full size wheel but at least its guaranteed to get you home. |
I share SKH's anxiety about carrying a sealant kit and as such I have ordered the tempa spare wheel option. I assume the sealant kit would be stored in the same location as the spare wheel i.e. under the boot floor, so in effect there is no gain by ordering it over the spare wheel.
Perhaps in a small sports car, where weight is important and space is at a premium, there is an arguement for not carrying a spare wheel around. |
UK cars come as standard with the pump and air sealant kit.
If you want a tyre, order the No Cost Option Tempa Spare Wheel. |

My XC70 has a Tempa Spare Wheel, but I want to know is if you're on your family holiday, with a fully loaded car and you get a flat; you put the Tempa Spare Wheel on but will the full sized wheel you've just taken off still fit where the Tempa Spare Wheel was?
If not where do they expect you to store it when your car is full, on the wife's knee....!!! and if it does fit why can't they just fit a full sized spare (even if its only a steel or at an added cost). Chaddie |
Puncture Protection
A lot of new cars tend not to come with spare wheels, they now give you a can of sealant, if you do get a puncture, you would just put the sealant in the tyre, so your able to carry on your journey getting you to the nearest garage to get your trye repaired. But the problem with these sealants, is that they can damage the inner tread of your tyre, which would end up you paying for a new trye, rather than having your punctured repaired.
I've found the best solution is to protect your tyres before you get hand, by treating your tyres with a <a href="http://punctureseal-it.co.uk/blog">Tyre Sealant</a>. Then if I do get a puncture the sealant would seal the punctured hole without any air loss and not spoiling my journey. |
i specced with a tempa spare...
you cant tow with a repaired tyre....i'd rather have a tempa to hobble to the garage. I understand that you need a warm tyre to activate the sealant. or be able to run up to a certain speed before it makes a decent seal. I dont want this worry down on the types of country roads i use. the gunk makes a tyre unrepairable. i dont want to rely on a can of gunk working, id rather see the wheel in the boot. and i beleive that you can fit a full size under the boot floor when you remove the spare. the tempa sits on a polystyrene filler, so you woudl have to take hat out, and i guess a full size will fit. |
I've gone for the Tempa Spare Wheel option too. I just don't fancy having to rely on a small can of foam in an emergency.
