Space Saver Wheel - Different Bolts?
 

Greetings all,

I have a MY14 V70 with 19" 'Inscription Bor' alloys.

I intended to quickly rotate my tyres using the space saver spare, but found that I couldn't get it to fit!

The bolts that fit the alloys seemed to hit a hard stop in the hub with at least 1cm before they were doing anything resembling holding the spare on.

The spare itself appears original and fits in terms of spigot diameter, bolt pattern, etc., just is significantly narrower than the alloys.

I can't see any alternative bolts in the kit. Should this have been supplied with the car or have I missed something?

The first time that we had to use the space saver we ran into exactly this issue. The recovery guy who had taken us to the services reckoned we should have some shorter bolts somewhere (said that Lexus do).

Don't panic!

The problem is that the holes in the hub are open from the back, and they fill up with junk and also corrode which tightens the thread when you get beyond the normal depth of the bolt.

This is not helped by the genuine cheese wheel wrench provided in the kit. I have a breaker bar with adjustable angle head and a good quality socket in the car instead.

So to answer the question - you're not doing anything wrong nor missed anything. You've just got to push on through! You might help matters if you clean up the holes from the back too.

Re pushing through with the wheel bolts. The rust build up in the hub can damage the thread on the bolt and then the hub when you remove the bolts. Running a thread chaser or tap through during a major service should sort this and save expensive damage.
