new owner 2007 S40 R-Design 2.0
 

Hello :)

Long story cut short, i have an old series 3 land rover thats cost thousdands to keep on the road, im about to finish university having used my student loan to fix the landy!
Ive got a job lined up for when i finish, looking to be driving 60 miles a day. = landy not ideal.
Im not that interested in Golf's Bmw's, Ect ect... i have looked at a few S40s specifically the R design.
looking to put a deposit down tomorrow got a few questions,

The stereo has Aux in i see there are lots of different bluetooth solutions, which system gets your vote? i like the idea of the Volvotech module.

next, the Trip display one of the cars i looked at had the computer in the dash showing Range, mpg ect this was a 2008 ... the 2nd car a 57 plate has the 'premium sound system' 2 tone leather ect but i was unable to get it to show range ,mpg ect was the computer not fitted to all models ? what button combinations would i need to press when i take another look at the car?

Not all models have trip computers and it can seem a bit random working out which do and which don't - different models in different years, different options and option packages specified by original owners, etc.

In the indicator stalk is the knurled wheel that you will have turned on the one you looked at that had a computer to see the different functions you mention.

If the stalk does not have such a wheel, or turning that wheel only changes the message about DSTC (if anything at all), then it doesn't have the trip computer.

Can be enabled retrospectively if you are happy to pay Volvo a considerable sum of money for the necessary software...

ah not good news, i was hoping it was more me doing something wrong!!
it had the wheel on the indicator stalk and i could scroll thru messages and DTSC but nothing about range...
any one got an of the cost of the 'upgrade'

Not sure on cost, but when I asked my local Volvo specialist (not a main dealer but well recognised) about 3 years ago about a similar upgrade on a Mk 1 C70 he came back with £120...

Whatever, you can be sure it isn't cheap!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings...

That said, personally I wouldn't see the lack or trip computer as a deal breaker - yes, both my cars have them and they are useful, but (as was my response to the specialist above) it isn't really hard to live without it.

Obviously a matter of personal choice, of course!

yeah i guess, it shocked me what these cars do have and dont have! what other upgrades are there?

Almost everything on these is an optional extra, so most tend to be basic.
They don't come up that often so finding one with all the gadgets you want will be harder. Most things can be retro fitted but at a cost.
There are a few handsfree/bluetooth kits, GROM being a popular one, but unless you really know what you are doing it's best to get one fitted.
Rear parking sensors would be more important to me than trip meter.
Great car for cruising.

All sorts of combinations - various packs then various stand alone options, all on top of the model designations whose spec seems to vary year by year.

To be honest, it is hard to give a general picture. The better model designation the more it will have - for example, anything with "Lux" in its title will often have things like full leather, trip computer etc; Sport models will have spoilers and maybe bigger wheels, but might sacrifice things like the trip computer.

Then there is the question of what the original owner wanted - when bought new (only ever done it once, a 2009 S40) you were faced with this huge array of options and combinations and encouraged to spend as much as you would...

When buying used you really just have to take each example on its own merits, and see what it, as an individual car, does or doesn't have.

Correct me if i am wrong but i thought SE models came with pretty much everything inside in relation to trip computer, leather interior, premium stereo etc. Mine is a 2005 V50 se sport with everything, maybe things changed after that?

yeh good choice, less of these on the roads. I used to have all those addons on my previous S40 but the more of those gadgets on the car ... the more to go wrong.

I have an S40 T5 now ... only addon is the performance audio (I definitely recommend looking for that)

Having a look at the link you've posted, I'd make sure you get quite a bit knocked off that price. I got myself a 2.0L petrol S40 SE Lux for £4,550 at 118K miles and 2 years newer (09 plate) with full leather seats, trip computer, heated front seats, dual zone climate control, headlamp washers, automatic window wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror etc.. etc.. It's not R-design but R-design is nothing to do with speed or power just a slightly different body and as others say, usually not as highly specced in terms of gadgets.
