catalytic coverter

I have now had 3 cats from BM catalysts in as many months and the latest one which was installed on 20th November 17 appears to have failed (lambda light on). I am looking for a more reliable cat for my V90 1997. Any ideas please?

Lambda light is a engine management light on an early V90, I wouldn't suspect the cat just yet.....

V90 cat

Thanks NI_ Volvo_Nut. Would you know if that can be sorted by use of the OBD2 device? Or is this something only a Volvo specialist garage must deal with? My garage 'down the road' fitted the exhaust and I have booked it in for inpect
ion on Monday. Kind of you to have replied promptly.

I'm not 100% on the V90's, I think they are OBD I for which you need vol-fcr to read the codes. You need a VW OBD lead and the fcr software as well. There are bound to be member on here more clued up on V90's and fcr than me or even have the software and able to help further.

No 940/v90 etc is OBDII compliant, with your age of car you need to make up a Diag box to read codes, there is a how2 on here sometimes on ebay and a specialist will have something.

Aftermarket and non type approved cats don't last like a genuine, but for the massive price difference it is hardly surprising, but they should give a few years service at least.

The Lambda Light, is telling you that the engine is running rich/lean, and pretty sure there is no post cat lambda so only way to tell if the cat is working is with a probe up the exhaust.

Running rich and or burning oil will quickly kill a cat has the car had a clean bill of health?

For 96 model year, 960/90 went from Motronic 1.8 with single sensor to Motronic 4.4 with twin sensors..............

Fair enough my mistake, never really looked in that much detail at the late models.
