New d4 economy?
I m thinking of changing my v50 for a v60 and I was wondering if anybody had a new engine d4 and what they thought of it and it's economy?

I've had a V60 D4 SE manual since mid-July and done just over 6,000 miles.
It replaced a 2011 V60 D3 (with the 163bhp 5-cylinder motor) and I thought that would be a tough act to follow, as I REALLY liked that car. But the D4 is even better. The engine has even more punch that's even easier to access, it's a very quick car. It's more economical too. I've averaged a genuine 49.5mpg at the pumps from new (about 35% motorway driving, 65% short town / urban trips of 10 miles or less). The only thing I miss about my old V60 is the lovely 5-cylinder warble. |
Got a V60 geartronic, Fuelly tells the story below from the pumps although that will drop over winter to probably around 48 average. 18,000 miles done so far, I get 50-55 on long trips solo, more like 45 fully loaded with roofbox, family (5), dog and bikes.

Had mine (S60 D4) since the first week in December. Just about clocked up 1900 miles over the holiday period with quite a lot of that being motorway. Average fuel consumption is showing at 44.4mpg, average speed is showing at 27mph.
I'm hoping this improves over time. Any thoughts on that? My previous 320d averaged 47mpg throughout it's life (never reset the computer) and over 25000 miles in my hands. Most of this was local commuting. I don't do motorway trips that often. Apart from the slightly disappointing mpg (so far) I think the engine is great....smooth, quiet, responsive. |
That seems low AlanPa - although given the wind, rain, snow, low temperatures, extra headlight hours, extra everything basically maybe it's more reasonable than it first seems. I certainly notice a massive difference in economy now the temperatures have dropped compared to summer when I had brim-to-brim returns of over 60mpg on occasion and regularly in the high 50s. But I was getting a similar return to you over the holidays in the worst of weather, with a fully loaded car and the massive extra drag of a roofbox for more than 1000 miles. Didn't touch the Eco+ button or cut back on heating seats etc, so I'd have expected your numbers to easily beat mine (I was getting mid 40s on longer runs on country roads but there was a lot of overtaking to be done so definitely not driving with an eye on the fuel gauge).

Mine is an XC60 so not comparable but to back up the winter mpg drop, my car was getting 46-48mpg on standard runs in the summer. I am now getting 40-42mpg on identical journeys. Bring on the warm weather but boy am I grateful for the drop in diesel prices.

I'm similar to AlanPa - brand new D4 ( manual ), I've done about 1200 miles, mixture of motorway, country roads and urban. Just averaging about 45.
Pretty disappointed with that - was not expecting the Volvo claimed 70+, but thought I'd get around 60. Hoping the engine will "loosen up" a bit with a few more miles, and maybe winter's playing a part there too, but wouldn't have thought by that much. |
I can chalk up another similarity to AlanPa and K5 Gus - Our D4 manual V60 has done about 2500 miles since early November and averaged around 44-45 - That's mostly A roads in traffic though and neither me or the other half exactly drive like nuns, but again was hoping for slightly better economy.

If I export the data from my VOC app then it shows how harsh winter short trips are on the D4's mpg. Trips start at under 10mpg for the shortest, rising to mid 30s mpg for short trips less than 5 miles. Between 5 and 30 miles they vary between mid 30s to low 40s, then above 30 miles they rise again to mid 40s to mid 50s. That's for all trips running back to late November.
In summer the shortest trips still easily made mid 20s, longest got as high as 60s regularly. I had one trip that showed over 70mpg, but that was from one motorway service station to another on a warm, still day with no traffic so very unusual. :) |
Thanks Andy, interesting. Didn't realise the temperature made such a difference !
