B5244S 2.4i oil

What engine oil do people recommend for this engine? I'm struggling to find 10W-40 fully synthetic, is part synthetic OK?

Cheers.

Is semi-synth perfectly fine for the 2.4i - loads of options there?

Volvo recommend 5w/30 synthetic for this engine ... they do say on the oil chart from the period not to use a *W/40 oil .

There is no such thing as a diesel oil really. Diesel oil just means it is high in detergents, but this level of detergent doesn't harm petrol engines. Good oil nowadays is for both engines and would've been termed 'diesel oil' a decade ago, essentially, 'petrol' oil has been done away with.
Have you looked on Opieoils.co.uk?
There's a forum discount too, iirc its Volvo10

Plus, if the specified grade is indeed 10w40, then 5w40 and 0w40 are both totally compatible and readily available. They are all essentially 40 grade oils, but 5 and 0 circulate faster/easier when cold. All three are the same at operating temp, which is around 1/6 the viscosity of 0w at 40°c, 1/7 the visc of 5w and about 1/9 the visc of 10w at 40°c if anybody decides to try and claim that 0w40 is 'too thin' 👍
If 5w30 then 5w30, 0w30 both absolutely fine.
Check what ACEA spec the manual requires not just the viscosity.

I use Shell Helix Ultra 5w/30 ACEA 3 and have had no problems.

Semi-synthetic is fine. Though 10w40 fully synth is readily available.

Cheers guys. If 5W-30 fully synth is used that's great because it's the same as my S40 but I could have sworn it says to use 10W-40 in the manual.. I'll check it later today when I'm back with the car.

Well if its says 10w40, dont use 5w30! Vice versa...

Looking in the owners handbook for my 98 V70- blue text is mine

Oil Quality
Petrol engines:ACEA A2/A3
this would include the B5244S
Oil which meets ACEA A3 is recommended for turbocharged engines
...
Synthetic or semi-synthetic oils may be used if they fulfil the quality requirements as specified above this implies the expectation of not using synth unless it meets spec

This chart is very similar to the chart in the handbook with the 10W/30 and 10W/40 shaded pink eg the Volvo recommendation

The only issue I can see with various weights of oil is the /30 is specified for ambient temps up to 30c and we get a few days each year when it goes above that
