D5 Not cranking
55 plate XC90 D5/163 black top with 80k miles.
Recently over that last few weeks I'd noticed the engine would not crank when turning the key. This was most often when warm, but I didn't pay that much attention to it. I would try to start it and nothing would happen, so I'd turn the key back to 0 and try again, and it would crank and start. It's not a starting issue, if it cranks, it starts. Today after being driven in the morning, it will no longer crank. I haven't had the chance to check the battery or alternator yet, but don't think it's those, but I could be wrong. When it does crank, it has loads of juice and fires as normal. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. |
Definitely THOROUGHLY check the connections onto the starter motor and if all ok, consider starter motor issue.
The connections have in the past caused same issue as yours.👍 https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...or+connections |
+1 on the above.
On mine it was the small push-on spade terminal that was corrded, just needed a bit of a sand down and for good measure I crimped the connection to make a slightly tighter fit. |
It's all been said above.... very likely a simple, cheap easy fix.

Fired straight up this morning, but removed and cleaned the connections, so hopefully that will be that. Thank you very much for the replies.

Can you let us know, once you know, if that cures it.

Starting perfectly again.
