How many miles to keep the V70 for.
 

Looking for people's opinions on mileage on these cars.

I currently drive a 2009 Euro 5 D5 205ps auto SE V70. I have owned for over two years. Before that it was my Dad's who owned it from 6 months old. Before that it was the supplying dealer. It has a full Volvo service history. A box file full of receipts and invoices. In the time I've had it I have replaced the exhaust sensor, refurbished the wheel (back to bare metal) to fix a slow puncture. Had the radiator replaced and leaks from the windscreen washer system fixed.

Currently on 110k miles. Needs new front tyres. Possibly front pads and discs soon as well.

I took out a loan for the next four years with the aim of changing the car and paying back my Dad what is left of what I owed for putting a deposit down on a house.

First instance is to trade it in, but will struggle to get much over £3k, then get a newer car.

Now thinking, refresh it and run for another 4 years, doing 15k to 18k a year? Then look to change after that.

For what it's worth, I have a 2012 S80 with nearly 135k miles on it and plan to keep it going for much longer I hope.

My auto box might need attention, but apart from that the car is solid. I spotted a doppelgänger of my car - similar reg, same colour and wheels earlier this year - when I looked up its MOT history it had done ~340k!

If you service the car and look after the gearbox it should serve you well.

Back in the days when Volvo used three numerals in their model identifiers instead of one letter and two numerals, people who bought Volvos expected them to last indefinitely and they usually did. Since Ford, I don't think that people have the same expectations of their Volvo but I intend to try to keep mine for the rest of my life. It's a 2012 XC7 and currently has just exceeded 50K miles, so if it can do a quarter of a million miles, and Volvo taxis often do, it's got another 35 years left to run, which is more than I've got!

Volvos are renowned for their longevity, and your car has the bonus of being a known quantity, which is more than one could say about any replacement car.

If it runs well, gives you everything that you need and isn’t too expensive to maintain, then keep it. A well-maintained V70 will outlast most cars.

If at some point you decide that you want something different, then that would be the time to sell it.

Well mine is an older model, first of the phase 2 with 2.5 tdi engine but it has covered 260k miles, I have owned for 9 years and still have no intention of parting with it, I have considered so called upgrading but as this car never causes any problems it seems a waste of money

If the history is known I'd want to stick with it personally - it always takes me a while to settle into new cars to work out the quirks and niggles that need fixing.... if it aint broke and all that.
Currently have a 2003 V70 2.4 on about 75k - I'm the second owner and know the first.
Also just purchased a 2006 XC90 V8 on 205k - I'm the third owner and its got full Volvo history from new.

Unless the car is no longer fit for purpose-i.e. you need something bigger/smaller/more economical]then I'd pay your dad back,some of the remainder would then be spent on sorting the car[tyres/brakes/gearbox flush]and then any remainder put to a better/more important use rather than just changing the car basically for the sake of having something newer.Newr does not automatically equate to better!

2009 V70 2.4d geartronic here with 172k miles... just keep servicing and it will look after you.

I think back in the days when you expected it to last forever.... you would also pull the engine and rebuild it at some stage, and then ultimately the transmission and axle.

Nowadays cars really do last forever... when did you last hear of a D5 being scrapped because it was literally worn out?

It will last as long as you look after it, start missing services and expect it to fail.
While mine is a manual I change gearbox oil every 2 years along with brake fluid and power steering fluid.
There is the old fashioned idea of preventative maintenance that the engineer in me subscribes to, not popular these days I accept but it's kept my cars reliable for the 49 years I've been driving and most were old bangers. I can count on one hand the times I've needed a breakdown truck in all those years.
As for the miles it will do, I baught a V70 with 104k miles on it, it's now on 230k and still going strong.

Service it, replace the parts as they wear and carry on, it will be a lot cheaper than replacing it.

My landrover discovery is 26 years old, has 200k miles on it and I'm fitting a new chassis under it for far less than it would cost me to replace it for something that will inevitably need work on it.
