S60 D5 Running Cool

Hi There,

My S60 with a D5 engine has started to run cool. It does get warm on a long run but takes a long time and is barely scratching the surface around town.

Is it as simple as the thermostat stuck open?

Any clues?

Austin

Hi.
Air-lock , Low coolant level but most likely a stuck thermostat.
Quite a common issue as the central pin gets stuck inside the housing.
Cheaper to replace just the inner part but Volvo likes you to buy the complete thing.

Just an update to this. The thermostat had a rubber coating and this had started to come adrift and was preventing the stat from closing. More of an issue was getting access to the housing. Even with the power steering pump out of the way, the aluminum bracket also holds the alternator and the A/C pump. All of a sudden, it started to look like a massive job! In the end, I ground a small part of the bracket away to give me access. Job done and all good.

Another cheat option is to fit a thermostat from an old renault - they just push into the rubber hose. They get used alot in custom stuff.

I fitted one over a year ago while i was waiting for a new thermostat and housing to arrive - its still in and the new replacement is still on the garage shelf and ive got no intention of changing it either.

They used them on loads. If you search renault thermostat on ebay.
Make sure to get on that opens at about the right temp - the 5 gt turbo ones seem to open at lower temps.

Also make sure you fit it the correct way in the pipe :tongwink:

its also a common mod on Rover 75's as the thermostat on those is a pain in the arse to replace apparently.
