Engine Oil question....Puzzled

I have a 2010 XC60 D3. Looking in the manual the ACEA spec. for the oil is A5/B5. This engine of course has a DPF and I was always lead to believe it's more beneficial to use an oil with an ACEA spec of C1 to C5.
Can any one tell me why Volvo don't specify the low SAPS oil?
Is there a technical reason?

As I do a lot of short runs where its difficult to get the exhaust up to the optimum operating temperature, Can I use the Low SAPS oil in order to preserve my DPF?

Just phone Volvo UK, that didn't have a clue and asked me to phone my local Volvo Stealership. Phoned them... they didn't have a clue!

DPF's are diesel particulate filters - the SAPs rating of the oil is a minor issue in the scheme of things. If you have issues with the DPF not being maintained due to short journeys, changing the oil spec is unlikely to be relevant.

Volvo seem to make dpf's from weird sh1t!
Use A5/B5. Volvo have some of the least troublesome dpfs, even using high saps oil, and, conversely, Tim at Opie was telling me of a customer who used C spec and kept having dpf trouble until he changed back to A/B spec then the problems ceased... Doesn't seem to make sense, and it was only 1 case, but it happened and only the oil was different.

I’ve wondered the exact same thing, to the point of calling Miller Oils (purchased from Opie) and they confirmed that the full SAPS oil was the right stuff for the 5 cyl engines. Seems that it’s the newer 4 cyl engines use the low SAPS oil and neither is any good in the other engine type.

Bit of a pain as I now have to keep 2 different types of oil for the family cars.

Hey ho

This is true. We never worked out an explanation for it.

Cheers,
