Leather steering wheel scratch
I noticed the other day that there is a scratch or dig a couple of mil long on the leather steering wheel facing the windscreen. I could feel it when I turn the wheel at a particular point. No idea how it happened, does anyone know if this can be repaired or does it need a new wheel ?

I’ve had a few similar on mine - they seem to self-heal over time though. Certainly can’t see or feel them now.

Zips are the main culprit, certainly in my case. Yes, it will self heal with use. However, leather covered steering wheels are not as durable and long lasting as a some other materials and will eventually wear out, usually as holes at the ten to three positions at first. Hopefully at well over 100k miles of course.

If it gets bad you could always try this.

I was watching one of these renovation programmes the other day (desperate times, desperate measures) and there was a woman repairing an antique leather knife sheath. She was using some form of leather filler in very small quantities. Don't know any more and maybe the cure would be worse than the problem. Just saying.

I have several of these fine scratches at the bottom part of the steering wheel caused my jean's rivets on the little pocket on the side.
Every now and then I apply a fine coat of vaseline and clean it after (for obvious reasons) and seems to be healing the leather and makes them fade away. I miss my previous cars with cut bottom steering wheels. |
