not your normal EML question
 

i am after some advice if possible, i have purchased a volvo v70 2.5 tdi 140bhp, it is the P2 shape, bought it about two weeks ago and have just noticed that the EML does not light up when you turn on the ignition on, so i have removed the instrument cluster and had a look where the diodes are on the circuit board, only to find that the diodes for the eml and the vehicle service have been removed, i have had the man check the car with a snap on diagnostic machine, this connected to the car with no problem and he has found no fault codes at all, now the big question is can the DIY man [me] repair this or is this a specialist job, car starts and runs ok, its a little bit sluggish at low revs, but the turbo comes in about 2.5 rpm and it is livable, any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated

How is it liveable when it's an MOT fail..... or do you know a dodgy tester who will ignore the non illuminating EML?

I bought it two weeks ago and never picked up on the eml as the car was started when i was looking for smoke from the exhaust, and it was moted in september, so as there was no eml on when i bought, how am i supposed to know, why the hell do you think im asking, i'm looking for some friendly advice NOT agrivation, thanks for your negative input, by the way, when the mechanics £5000.00+ diagnostic machine says there is NO faults, it is livable for me and dont ever say on here that i know dodgy MOT testers as i don't, car mot was done in york, i live in Durham, do you think i know every MOT tester in England, your post has been reported, just so you know i have not done it behind your back

Calm yourself down...the response wasn't offensive in my eyes.

A non-illuminating EML is an MOT failure, so you'll want it fixing before the next MOT...assuming your MOT tester checks it (which he should).

That was the jist of the response as I read it, and it included a link to a guy who can reinstate the LEDs on your cluster. Seems like reasonable advice to me!

I take it you missed the very helpful Web address for the guy who may be able to fix it cheaply.....

The EML needs to come on and go out every time you turn on the engine so it's a very simple check for anyone to make when buying.
No £5k diagnostic equipment required just a working eye and ideally a brain cell.

Maybe you do know an MOT tester who wouldn't check that the EML illuminates on key position II? I do! I certainly wouldn't get my pants in a bunch about it!

Anyway, he's given you your answer - to get it sorted properly, you need the LEDs reinstating, and the folks at the web address he quoted will be able to sort it out for you.

Does the TDI have an EML?

My (troublesome) example never lit an EML it just came up with the engine service required message in the corner of the DIM.

i have removed the clocks and the EML and the Vehicle service diodes look as if they have been removed or are different to all the others, but i'm going for they have been removed, there is very little boost from the turbo, you can just say feel it at 2000k, however no faults have shown on a snap on diagnostic check, car starts up first toutch of the key, however there is a slight diesel knock at low reves, that seems to dissapear when the engine gets warm

Yes, I'm pretty sure the TDI will have an EML. You just don't necessarily get the EML with the "Engine Service Required" warning.

Good luck with getting the clocks looked at, John. I would recommend finding someone local to you who can VIDA scan it, just in case the Snap-on kit missed something (unlikely, I know). There's a thread for local VIDA owners.

I don't know the TDIs well enough to know if they throw a code for low boost like a D5 does...but a D5 certainly does!
