Tailgate wont open
 

Hoping for a bit of guidance. Tailgate on our 2004 XC90 wont open. I can hear the central locking lock and unlock the doors et using the key fob but not the tailgate so clearly something gone wrong. Is there a way to open the rear tailgate manually or is there a known fault i can go and try and fix before asking the dealer to look at it and the bill that will follow.

Had the same problem with our 04 XC90, had to have the catch assembly replaced in the end. However one thing that sometimes gave us access when it had jammed was to push the boot release catch fully back and then try unlocking again - it seemed to stick and hold part way back after releasing and the electronics failed to activate!!
Did not find a manual override - so would also like to know if possible in case it happens again!

Sounds like the rod has rusted and seized. Look for bestgears post on replacement- an easy diy job.

Yes,mine does the same,just waiting for the weather to warm up and i'll be replacing the rod on mine. Just lock it,push the lever fully forward and unlock again and it'll open.

On my XC90 you have to push the lever towards the car before squeezing and that way it opens - Took me a while to work it out :-)

As in the post before yours, try pushing the flap/handle away from you, lock the car with remote, unlock with remote, and try flap handle. It may be partially seized or sticking and needs lubrication on the metal pin?

Try Cassell method first , If it didn’t work ,follow the below method, because I had the same problem couple of weeks when my wife locked the door with part of kids school bag in the tailgate.

If you are handy with spanners you remove the whole panel from inside the car with the guidance posted in the below thread.

You have to release the cable (the one with yellow plastic clip) from the latch and push the cable inside towards the lock – By doing this other end of the cable will hit the lock latch inside & the lock mechanism will be released and you can open the door from inside.
Remember to push in and out the cable for like 1 inch only - at some point the cable will hit that latch inside the lock.
