Identifying steering rack
I thought the part number for the PAS rack was on the passenger side on the top.
Mine doesn't seem to have it there nor can I see it anywhere else. Any ideas where else it may be? And who may be able to help if I can't find it? Thanks Reesky :( |
Afaik that sticker has a bar code and not much else of any use. I seem to remember a poster saying the p/n is only visible when the rack is off.
You could have a look in the folds of the inner tie rod boots. Mine has SMI moulded in the rubber and takes the shorter of the two available inner tie rods with the finer pitch inner thread. VIN to a dealer or rebuild specialist might clarify it but my factor swore I should have needed the other tie rod. |
Cheers, is thjis somethhing the dealer would know?

According to my Vida, for my V70 which is a 2001 I need the SMI one. It seems to suggest that up to 2003 models use SMI, and 2004 on use ZF.

For what it's worth mine is 2003 and has the SMI, or at least it has SMI on the boot and takes the short inner tie rod :) |
On Vida the part number for SMI is 274179 and the part number for ZF is 274353. On closer inspection, it also says the same parts are used on the S60 and V70.

Phoned a stealer today who was only able to give me the exchange number... and then it needs load of kits to adapt it to match the replacement.
My intention wasn't to get them to fit it, just the part number. Phoned an Independent in Nottingham today to get the cost of them supplying / fitting... waiting to hear back. What a nightmare. Meanwhile as a temporary measure I have used Lucas Stop Leak which made it 3x better but ultimately probably won't do it any favours and should be used as a temporary fix. I'm going to change the pump too ASAP. |
£750 for a replacement rack all in fitted... how does that sound?

Chances are if its pre 2004 its an SMI rack and anything after was ZF. All you really have to find out is if it has the steering assist (some power module attached).
I just bought a second hand one without power assist (as my car didnt have it off a car of the same year, 2003 and fitted it myself. Payed £250 for it about 2 years ago, mine was leaking like ive never seen!!! It took 2 ramps and 2 car jacks to get the car completely off the ground and about 6-7 hours of grunting and unfastening to complete but i managed it on my own, except for the bit where you pull the rack out the wheel arch (that needs 2 people). Its quite a nice job, just fiddly especially when you need to lower the sub-frame at the rear enough to get it out (which was very tight on ramps lol) |
I have a good used rack for £120 but i cant check the part numbers at the minute as my laptop is away being repaired
