V70 Questions - Help!
 

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help:

1. Since taking ownership of my 1997 V70 T5, I've noticed a whining noise when cold from under the bonnet somewhere. Lasts for a few minutes then disappears. The dealer from where I purchased the car has diagnosed this as being a belt, and I think he referred to it as the 'Poly V' though, could be wrong!

I need to understand what this belt is/does, as they have already said that it is doubtful covered by warranty. In that case, is it straightforward to replace myself or any other tips to stop the noise.

2. A large plastic cover which sits underneath the front of engine bay/radiator broke off on one side during a lengthy motorway journey recently, so I was forced to remove completely. Am I right in thinking that this is purely a guard to prevent debris from finding its way into the engine bay from underneath - and how important is it to replace?
